LEGO Star Wars Battles Game Cancelled | Game Rant
A mobile, PvP Lego Star Wars game that had been in beta for two years has been canceled instead of getting a full release. Lego Star Wars Battles developers announced its closure through in-game announcements to players.
The mobile game's developers warned players ahead of time that the title was wrapping up on July 1. After the news, players were encouraged to spend whatever currency they had left in their accounts. The mobile app then went offline when those working Lego Star Wars game warned that it would.
Lego Star Wars Battles continued what has been a long-running series of games tied to the Star Wars universe. It stood apart from most of the others in the franchise because it pitted players against one another, rather than an AI opponent. Battles offered real-time multiplayer PvP that featured iconic arenas that were seen throughout the Star Wars cinematic universe.
Not only did players lead their armies of characters against one another, but Lego Star Wars Battles also featured a tower-defense aspect of the game. The towers allowed the Lego Star Wars combatants to clear away waves of enemies as well as claim pieces of territory on the map. The end game, and the way to win, was for a player to take control of an enemy's base, and rounds on the mobile game could take a while as control of the map could change hands depending on how the waves of fighters progressed through the game.
Developed by Playdemic, in a partnership with Lego, the Star Wars Lego game first had a soft launch back in 2019. According to Pocket Gamer Biz, the title was originally being tested in Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands, Sweden, Malaysia, and several other countries around the world. It's possible the game was shut down because Playdemic was acquired by Electronic Arts in June, and EA decided it was no longer worth supporting the title.
For now, there has been no official announcement of exactly why Star Wars Lego Battles was shut down after such a long period of testing. Until either EA or Playdemic does shed some light on the reason for the shutdown it will remain a mystery. Some believed the paywall that slowed players' level advancement might have played a part in the game not taking off the way those behind it had hoped.
