Red Dead Redemption 2 Players Make a Good Point About Arthur and John's Horses
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a complex game, and there's no doubt about that. From all the minor details in Red Dead Redemption 2 to the big ones, there's plenty of reasons gamers are still playing it (and discovering new things) to this day.
A recent post on the Red Dead Redemption 2 subreddit sparked a conversation, wherein something that's unique powerful about the game came about. The post, seen below, is titled, "Returning my horse to her home before the final mission." As many players know, Arthur Morgan's final mission ends in his death and leading up to that is the death of his horse. What players sharply point out is that the transition between Arthur and John, particularly in relationship to their horses, has a ton of variables.
For example, perhaps the simplest is that Arthur will say goodbye to his horse when it dies, comforting it in death and thanking it. Avoiding this death is why the aforementioned Reddit post is about letting the horse go before the mission, and if players use a horse they do not have a bond with, Arthur does not thank the horse. It gets more complicated than that when factoring in Buell, which is perhaps Red Dead Redemption 2's most famous horse.
To unlock this horse, players have to complete about four missions for Hamish Sinclair, who will gift the horse to player after completing the fourth missions. It's actually typical for players to wait until Red Dead Redemption 2's ending to unlock this horse; otherwise, it could meet the fate of the horse above if unlocked by Arthur Morgan. That's only one variable, though.
The interactions between Hamish and John Marston actually change rather significantly depending on if Arthur visited Hamish once, twice, or three times. That means that there's an alternative scene for every Hamish visit, depending on if players are Arthur, if players are John, and if player are John, the scene depends on how many times they visited as Arthur. As it stands, there's quite a few variable choices when it comes to this particular horse, Arthur Morgan, and John Marston (when to get Buell, how does Buell die, what scenes are played, who gets the horse, and more).
As the Redditors also discussed, creating this many scenes for this many variables as Rockstar never knew if players would bond with their horses or visit Hamish as Arthur or John had to be a lot of work. It goes to show the fine craftmanship of long-form storytelling in Red Dead Redemption 2, something this franchise will always have going for it. It may not be cause for concern for this particular franchise, but it is worth noting that development practices for GTA 6 make stories like Red Dead 2 less likely, according to Arthur Morgan actor Roger Clark. As such, players should appreciate what they have, as Red Dead fits the mold of a once-a-generation game.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
