The Lord Of The Rings Almost Had A Nude Scene | Game Rant
Nobody's perfect. Most people have that little guilty pleasure that they never tell anyone about. For some, that might be outdated anime memes. For others, maybe it's fleeting glimpses at fleshy bits in otherwise largely tame movies. As specific as that sounds, it's surprisingly (or perhaps suspiciously) more common than one might think, and it turns out that Lord of the Rings, one of the most mainstream epic of epics out there, almost included such a scene.
That's right, The Lord of the Rings almost tarnished the poor untainted eyes of young viewers everywhere by including a brief shot of two characters in a decidedly less-than-dignified state. Shockingly enough, even those who spent a not-insignificant percentage of their natural lives powering through all the behind-the-scenes features those films had to offer probably didn't know about it. This new information comes from the same place where most interesting Lord of the Rings tidbits do nowadays, Stephen Colbert.
Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, who played the hobbits Merry and Pippin in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, recently appeared on Colbert's Late Show to promote their podcast The Friendship Onion. Naturally, as these things go, the conversation eventually shifted over to nudity and various nudity-related subjects. This culminated in Boyd detailing a scene for The Two Towers that was concocted by writer Philippa Boyens but never saw the light of day. "When Merry and Pippin are up Treebeard," Boyd said, recanting Boyens' description of the scene, "he gets afraid and shakes his branches, which makes you guys fall, and as you hit all the branches on the way down, by the time you hit the ground, you're naked. And Merry turns to Pippin and says, 'It's cold, isn't it?' And Pippin says, 'Hold me, Merry.'"
This discussion actually stemmed from a bit of a controversy going through the fandom regarding Amazon Prime's upcoming Lord of the Rings series. Many fans are worried that the prequel will take too many cues from sources like Game of Thrones and try to be a little too "adult" for how they perceive the source material. Naturally, since humans are humans, the concept of "adulting up" a show doesn't usually refer to more mature themes and writing, but more to lots of naked folks.
The scene in question brought up by Boyd pretty clearly sounds like a gag, and was likely just meant as a bit of comedy rather than any sort of titillation. The reactions of Boyd and Monaghan to first hearing about it are gold, though, with Boyd freaking out and Monaghan saying, "I was kind of into it." However, Colbert himself (a long-time proud Lord of the Rings nerd) called out how the idea isn't all that farfetched, pointing out that J.R.R. Tolkien's original book even included a segment where hobbits stripped down. He's a gem, that Colbert.
As for the upcoming prequel series, there's been no official word on whether it really will take that more mature approach (or how it defines "mature"). So fans will just have to wait and see. But since the show is currently in production, perhaps that means the information will begin its slow news drip soon enough. But one thing's for certain: it had better give fans some quality second breakfast scenes.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
