Tribes of Midgard: Is There Crossplay? | Game Rant
Tribes of Midgard is a new survival-action game that takes inspiration from Norse mythology, featuring Giants, Dark Elves, and many more mythical enemies. Players must fend off against these creatures by collecting resources in the day to craft tools, and combat them at night. The game can be enjoyed solo, but there is also an option to play with friends. A maximum of 10 players are allowed to team up and take on waves of enemies together.
Tribes of Midgard is at its best when playing with friends, allowing a deeper level of strategy, and making facing off against the title's many enemies a little easier, even if the difficulty doesn't go slightly up when playing in a team. However, not all friends share the same gaming platform, and PC and PlayStation players might want to combine forces for some multiplayer fun. To do this, Tribes of Midgard would need to be crossplay enabled.
Tribes of Midgard does not currently support crossplay. It is very likely that the action-survival title will add crossplay in the near future, however, as a developer took to r/tribesofmidgard to answer a curious Redditor's crossplay question, two months before release. The developer clarified that while Tribes of Midgard would not have crossplay at launch, Norsfell Games is looking into adding crossplay, and would update the community when/if it is possible.
Norsfell Games is a fairly small developer, so it's nice to see the company acknowledge the want for crossplay support. There was no indication as to why crossplay could not be made possible, but it's unlikely to be Sony's dislike of crossplay support, as the company has recently softened its stance of being resistant to crossplay games appearing on PS4 and PS5.
While Tribes of Midgard does not currently support cross-platform play, it does support cross-gen gaming. This means PS4 and PS5 friends can mix and match classes and playstyles together as much as they want. It's bad news for portable gaming fans though, as Tribes of Midgard did not release for the Switch, and there have been no hopeful Reddit comments or the like to indicate that a Switch port is in development.
If fans were on the fence about buying Tribes of Midgard and are put off by its lack of crossplay, the news of the devs looking into crossplay support might sway them into still purchasing the game. It's still enjoyable as a solo title, and when friends meet up with each other in the future, they should be able to dive right into the fun gameplay, and not stress over beginner mistakes, or how to unlock all the classes.
Tribes of Midgard is out now for PC, PS4, and PS5.
