Aquaman Star Jason Momoa Comes To The Defense Of Superhero Movies

Aquaman is known for defending the ocean and all the creatures in it. Now that Aquaman 2 has officially announced its title and has begun filming, fans are even more excited for the superhero genre. This comes just in time as Jason Momoa has recently come to the defense of superhero movies everywhere.

It started when a couple of well-known and heavily respected filmmakers in Hollywood gave their opinions on the superhero genre. Marvel and DC have created epic storylines and franchises with their characters for over a decade now. Their movies have dominated box offices everywhere and it's impossible not to notice their growth in popularity. Filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who made classic films like Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, had something to say about it in during the promotional campaign for Netflix's The Irishman.

During this period, Scorsese argued that superhero blockbusters weren't true cinema, a sentiment that was later seconded by The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola.  The comments from these revered filmmakers stirred a conversation about the artistic value or lack thereof of superhero films that continues today. Luckily, Momoa is here to give his thoughts on the subject, and unsurprisingly, he has come to the defense of the entire superhero genre. It's fitting as many fans believe Aquaman is the best movie DC has made. Momoa won the hearts of fans everywhere as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones, then as Aquaman. Now his kind words are doing it all over again. "Superhero movies are bubble gum, but they're like Greek mythology: They have good and evil and heartbreaking moments. And, gosh, you're taking away other art forms if you stop making them," he said to the New York Times.

By other art forms, he means all the other hardworking behind-the-scenes talent, like visual effects and makeup. Momoa clarifies that he believes entertainment tastes are subjective anyway. He also points out that by making Aquaman, he gets to comment on the environmental causes he cares about. "I get to open peoples' eyes to things that are important to me," he said.

Momoa has always been vocal about using his voice to speak up for both human rights issues and environmental causes. He has been known to speak out against and deliver speeches about single-use plastic and climate change, plus he was a vocal supporter of Ray Fisher when the Cyborg actor spoke about the racism he experienced while working on Justice League.

The actor is currently in England shooting Aquaman 2, which will see him sporting a new hairstyle. What the story holds for the titular hero remains to be seen, although fans can likely expect the debate over the merits of superhero movies to continue between now and when Aquaman 2 finally hits theaters.

Aquaman 2 is currently scheduled for release in theatres on December 16, 2022.
