Nintendo Switch Online May Be Adding Free Game Boy Titles
Rumors seem to always swirl around the Nintendo Switch, especially with new hardware models. This latest rumor has to do with some new games that could be coming to the Nintendo Switch Online's free game service as some dataminers believe that Game Boy and Game Boy Color games could soon be available to Online subscription holders.
Nintendo Switch Online currently has a large selection of older games for anyone who has an online membership. As of this writing, players have access to Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) titles as well as online play for more modern games like Animal Crossing: New Horizon and Mario Party. However, a rumor going around is saying that Nintendo may be adding a new section to its retro game list in celebration of of its third anniversary which is coming up next month.
On the latest episode of Nate the Hate's podcast, the well-known insider NateDrake says there is a rumor of Nintendo Switch Online adding both Game Boy and Game Boy Color games to the free retro games currently available. This information comes from the infamous datamine from back in 2019; the Nintendo Switch datamine revealed that several unused emulators are currently living inside the Switch Online's code. One of these, nicknamed "Hiyoko" in the code, may be for Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.
The third anniversary of the online service is September 18, 2021, and it would be quite the celebration to add all of these nostalgic titles for Switch, Switch Lite, and even future Switch OLED owners to enjoy. It makes sense considering that the Switch is a handheld device just like Game Boy and Game Boy Color and lends itself to unearthing these titles that many haven't played in decades.
But along with this comes some sad news as well; the same insider doesn't believe that GBA games will be available for Nintendo Online subscribers. This is mostly because there are several Advance titles that are currently being re-released, updated, or completely remade. Rumors of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade's coming remake, a collection of GBC Castlevania games, and more have been popping up all over the internet this summer. There is even a brand new Game Boy Advance game that was just recently successfully funded on Kickstarter. This means that the GBA is still alive and kicking in a way, so seeing these any of these come to Switch Online is most likely not coming anytime soon.
