How The Editing In This Gripping Thriller Highlights The Dark Side Of Media
Dan Gilroy's neo-noir crime thriller Nightcrawler (2014) portrays the dark side of Los Angeles. Cinematographer Robert Elswit shows a romantic yet menace side: glorifying LA using wide angles and high-key lighting. At the same time, the use of low-key lighting also indicates the depressing nature of the film. The subtle editing pulls everything together, creating a much more realistic tone. John Gilroy’s editing and Elswit’s use of cinematography in Nightcrawler deserve more recognition. Together, the two of them do a remarkable job of highlighting the dark side of media.
