Quake Remastered Update Improves Multiplayer and Modding Support
In the world of fast-paced PC first-person shooters, much of the older gaming community will have nothing but fond memories of id Software's Quake, originally published in 1996. The gothic game was recently given a bit of a modern polish when a remastered patch for it went live through Steam in August. John Romero was even pleased the Quake remaster restored content, and the rejuvenation of the classic title has given old and new fans an excuse to start playing again. Since then, a new update has been unveiled which seems to continue improving the experience, especially for multiplayer.
In the latest Quake patch notes, some tweaks have been made to the game, particularly with regard to online and co-op modes. One of the big changes is added bot support for a number of levels, as well as improving bot melee attacks, and the way they move around the map, such as operating elevators. There has also been a change implemented in which hosts of multiplayer matches will now be highlighted with an icon rather than with a color. This is to make it easier for gamers who are color-blind to identify players.
One other major thing the patch has is modding improvements. Anyone who's been around video games for long enough knows that the PC modding community produces some amazing content for games, and the original Quake is no exception. With people still modding the game and creating custom maps, this latest update for the remastered version looks at adding more support for those who do wish to alter the game in some way.
Despite being a quarter of a century-old at this point, Quake is still very much worth playing, especially with the new 4K visuals that have been added recently. This newest patch shows that the studio is still keen to give love this classic FPS, and it also gives those who never got a chance to play it the first time round a fresh opportunity to see what all the fuss was about.
While the world waits to hear confirmation about whether a new Quake game may be in development, especially with talks that it could be with a female protagonist, fans can continue to battle gothic demons in the original. It may have been given a bit of a modern gaming makeover, but it still retains what the original Quake game was all about, which is its moody atmosphere, its fast-paced action, and its haunting Nine Inch Nails soundtrack.
