10 Biggest Xbox One Games By File Size, Ranked | Game Rant

Video games are progressively getting bigger and bigger. Such is a side effect of increasing technological power. Now, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. After all, bigger file size equals better game, right? We don't know if that's the case, but it sounds fancy, so we're going for it.

But sometimes it can get a little ridiculous. When you buy a video game, you expect to be able to play it. However, the problem of waiting for a 50 GB file to download is an increasing problem, and it's beginning to annoy some circles. With that in mind, these are the biggest Xbox One games by file size.

10 Mass Effect: Andromeda - 42.1 GB

Few people were happy with Mass Effect: Andromeda and fewer were happy with its massive install size. People were left rather hopeful after seeing the relatively enormous 42.1 GB file size, as this could indicate a world suitable for the Mass Effect canon and reputation. But, as we all know, Andromeda was a huge stinker. It disappointed fans and critics alike, and failed to reach the heights that its predecessors reached a decade prior.

9 Killer Instinct - 43 GB

This particular game served as the third entry in the Killer Instinct series and was released as a free to play launch game for the Xbox One. It did not make for a particularly great first impression. Despite a rather large install file around 43 GB, the game was heavily criticized for its lack of content. We don't know where all that size went, but it left a lot of people scratching their heads. Luckily, season two was far more positively received and helped save the dwindling Killer Instinct brand.

8 FIFA 18 - 43.5 GB

FIFA 18 served as the 25th (yes, the 25th) installment in EA's legendary (and legendarily profitable) FIFA series. It was also the second game in the series to utilize the Frostbite 3 game engine. It came equipped with a rather large file size of 43.5 GB, making it the largest game in the FIFA series. Luckily, the game received very favorable reviews and sold approximately 24 million units throughout every console version, so we don't think people minded.

7 Assassin's Creed Odyssey - 45.2 GB

Assassin's Creed Odyssey certainly makes a case for video games being too big. While the game was considered a notable improvement over its predecessors, it was often criticized for being too expansive and too dense. There was simply way too much to see and way too much to do. As you can imagine, Assassin's Creed Odyssey came with a suitably expansive install size, clocking in at roughly 45.2 GB. It's not as big as some open-world titles, but it packs a punch regardless. Much like a Spartan.

6 Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands - 49 GB

Ghost Recon Wildlands is an unfortunate sore spot in the history of Ubisoft and the Tom Clancy franchise. It was immediately met with controversy upon release due to the violent depiction of Bolivia, and it received lukewarm reviews from critics due to the repetitive missions, horrible controls, and bland narrative. It also came with a wallop of an install size, measuring in at 49 GB on the Xbox Marketplace. And that doesn't include the countless pieces of downloadable content! Luckily, Ubisoft scaled the file size down for the sequel, Breakpoint, which measured in around 42 GB.

5 Grand Theft Auto V - 57 GB

Grand Theft Auto V is a monster of a video game, and it comes equipped with a suitably monstrous install size. The listed required space measures in around 47 GB, although the actual required space is more like 57 GB. This isn't particularly out of the ordinary today, and many games have since surpassed it in size (including one of Rockstar's own - more on that in a bit). But at the time, the size of Grand Theft Auto V was practically unheard of. And if not unheard of, then especially rare and questionable. It certainly barged onto the scene with a grunt, that's for sure.

4 Red Dead Redemption II - 88 GB

Okay, when we said "more on that in a bit," we meant "in the next entry." Most people expected Red Dead Redemption II to have an enormous install. It was many years in the making, the graphics were otherworldly, and Rockstar promised an open-world experience like no other. It was clear that this beast was going to eat up some prime hard drive real estate, so it came as no big shock when we learned of its 88 GB file size. Yeah, some of us may have had to shuffle some storage around, but hey, it was worth it, wasn't it?

3 Forza Motorsport 7 - 95 GB

Forza Motorsport 7 garnered a bit of controversy when people realized it came with an unbelievable 95 GB install! That sort of thing is typically reserved for massive open-world games, not a simple racing title! The blu-ray disc itself held about 45 GB of data, which is large enough on its own, but Forza Motorsport 7 also required an additional 50 GB download. Well, "required" isn't the right word, as you COULD play the game without it. However, for those who wanted the "definitive 'Forza' experience" (whatever that means), they were forced to cough up the extra 50 GB in hard drive space.

2 Halo 5: Guardians - 98.2 GB

Halo is obviously Microsoft (and the Xbox's) ace in the hole. It's the one thing that Sony and the PlayStation 4 can't get their hands on. Yeah, it's about the only thing Microsoft has at this point (and even that's growing more debatable), but hey, it's something! It makes a certain kind of sense that Microsoft would pump as much data and raw video game goodness into Halo 5 as they could, and the result was an unbelievably massive 98.2 GB install. Yes, Halo 5 required more space than Red Dead Redemption II. Three years earlier. Imagine that.

1 Gears Of War 4 - 100-120 GB

If you thought the file size for Halo 5 was stupid, just take a look at Gears of War 4! Gears of War is another Microsoft IP, and Gears of War 4 served as both the first GOW game on the Xbox One and the first in five years. People were willing to make some room on their hard drives, but maybe not this much! When all was said and done, people were forking over 100 GB in hard drive space to hold Gears 4 on their consoles. When all the DLC and updates are taken into account, the game reaches around 120 GB of space. Crazy for a simple third-person shooter.
