Dr Disrespect Makes Fun of Twitch Streamer Who Complained About Lack of Subs
Amassing a subscriber-base on Twitch is understandably one of the most difficult undertakings as a content creator, but BadBunny's viral subscriber rant caught the attention and ire of several other streamers on the platform. One of the most famous streamers, DrDisrespect, also saw her rant, prompting him to respond on his channel a day later with a not-so-subtle parody mocking her outburst.
BadBunny, a popular streamer under the "Just Chatting" and "Politics" categories on Twitch, recently had a clip go viral where she openly calls out her viewership for not subscribing to her channel. Asking for subscribers is par for the course in content creation, but BadBunny's main issue stemmed from how her viewer count vastly outweighed her channel's subscriber count. BadBunny's rant soon became her most viewed clip on her channel, with over 170,000 views as of this writing.
"How did my whole speech about how I need subs to get the streaming going if you like the content... How'd that result in zero subs? There are regular [viewers] here," BadBunny exclaims during the clip, "Five dollars a month! How do you have hours of time to watch me, and not five dollars? What are you doing with your life where you have hours of time to watch Twitch, and not five dollars to provide for the content you're watching?... This is actually really f****** heartbreaking, because people really don't respect me as a content creator."
Controversy ensued, with several viewers and other Twitch personalities calling out the clip for being openly disrespectful to her viewership and in bad taste. The next day, DrDisrespect posted a couple of skits of his own as a parody to BadBunny's rant. In bombastic fashion, exactly what DrDisrespect is famous for, he acted out an exaggerated dramatization of the rant in a cheeky clip from his stream.
DrDisrespect also followed up his initial skit with another even more absurd parody right after, this time sarcastically comparing his stream's quality to the content on HBO's subscription service. He even goes as far as saying Game of Thrones would be outdated in comparison to his facetious channel. DrDisrespect has a distinct track record of openly commenting on Twitch controversy in between games, and this time is no different.
Since then, DrDisrespect's skits have also gone viral, now at a combined view count of over 280,000 views (approximately 219,000 and 62,000 respectively) on the parody. In between the comedy bits and in all seriousness, he comments aside about streaming in general, and how the financial gain is just an added bonus to him.
"I love streaming..." He said, "It's your choice, it really is. I could stream for free. I'm very passionate about this."
BadBunny's last stream was this past Monday, but she hasn't gone live since then. It's important to note that her viewership since that Friday stream has doubled, having topped out her last stream at 12,200 views. Her channel currently has over 1,100 subscribers and over 90,000 followers, but in the past week BadBunny hasn't received a significant increase in subscribers. Controversy and subscriber count aside, the publicity (negative or otherwise) from the clip has brought her thousands more viewers, so it'll be interesting to see how that affects her channel moving forward.
While a funny retort, it's not like DrDisrespect has been Twitch's white knight either, as he's experienced his fair share of controversy on the platform as well. Earlier this year he was temporarily banned from Twitch and banned from E3 after entering a public restroom while streaming IRL at the convention. He later issued a public apology and his Twitch account was restored shortly after.
While the ban only lasted for a few weeks, it prompted discussion within the Twitch community as to whether or not the punishment was severe enough and that DrDisrespect may have received special treatment due to his immense popularity on the platform.
