Shenmue 3 Update Adding Requested Features | Game Rant
It took 18 long years, but diehard fans of Sega's Shenmue series finally got the sequel they'd been waiting for in 2019 with Shenmue 3. For many players the game felt like the sequel they should've gotten back in 2003, and that's not necessarily a compliment.
Some of Shenmue 3's mechanics feel very outdated, particularly its slow and lengthy pace and unskippable dialogue. Gamers may have been fine with that stuff back in 2001, but now it's time for Shenmue to enter the modern age of gaming with an update that adds some highly requested features.
With patch 1.04, developer Ys Net has finally added a skip option to dialogue, making talking to villagers a lot less time consuming. The patch also fixes minigame bugs, environmental collision, and skill balancing, among other things. Along with the patch, Ys Net has also released the Battle Rally DLC in which main characters Ryo Hazuki, Wei Zhen, and Ren Wuying compete in a race. Players who come in first place win items. Players will first have to reach Niaowu in the core game to start the DLC.
Though it took this long to add skippable dialogue, this isn't the first update Ys Net made to try and fix Shenmue 3. Back in November, there was an update for the PS4 version that promised to make an even better play experience. PS4 owners in particular were complaining about framerate issues, with some saying that it would fall during fast motions and lead to jittering. News of framerate issues, along with it's arcane sensibilities, probably contributed to Shenmue 3's continuously discounted price and low sales.
Though this patch does fix some major issues players had with the game since the beginning, it's questionable if these changes will make anyone who was on the fence about Shenmue 3 pick it up. This patch may add some of the modern trends in open world gaming that were missing before, but there are still those who consider it a poorly made game as evidenced by some of Shenmue 3's reviews. In fact, there are quite a few fans of the Shenmue series who were upset about the ending of the game, with some considering it an absolute mess. Though to be fair, after 18 years of waiting, almost any ending was likely to fall flat of whatever fan expectations had been building up.
For fans who did buy Shenmue 3 but dropped it after one too many unskippable dialogue interactions, though, now's the perfect time to pick the game back up and complete any puzzles and quests they may have left incomplete. The Bell Tower puzzle can be especially frustrating, so here's a guide on how to complete it.
Shenmue 3 is available for PC and PlayStation 4. The Battle Rally DLC is now available for $7.99.
