10 Hardest Bosses In Super Mario Sunshine | Game Rant

Super Mario Sunshine has bosses that appear in many other games in the franchise, including Mario Kart, Mario Golf, and even Mario Party. But these guys originally came from this classic platformer, and they weren’t so friendly here as they are in the sports games.

Which was the strongest boss fight faced by Mario in Super Mario Sunshine? On this vacation, even the enemies weren’t relaxing as Mario needed to use his wits to achieve victory. These weren’t simply two or three-minute bosses that Mario could run by. No, these fights pushed Mario to his limits on his quest to save Princess Peach and restore Isle Delfino to its former glory!

10 Petey Piranha

Being the first true boss fight in the game, Petey Piranha is one of the most iconic bosses in the Mario series. He has reappeared in sports games and as a boss in other titles in the series. In Sunshine, Petey Piranha's first fight isn’t as difficult as the second one you do in Bianco Hills.

In this second fight, Petey Piranha flies around and shoots goop all over the town area, needing Mario to shoot him down with water when he stops. When he falls down, the boss works the same way as the first battle, except that he’ll spawn tornados constantly to throw Mario away, as well as spinning his head if Mario gets too close.

9 Gooper Blooper

The boss that appears in Ricco Harbor and Noki Bay, Gooper Blooper is much trickier in his second fight. This time, he has minions to accompany him as he sprays ink around, using his tentacles to smack Mario away.

Gooper Blooper may not be the hardest fight in Super Mario Sunshine but getting too excited during his second fight and diving to dodge an attack can send Mario flying off the side, landing into the poisonous water below and forcing him to make the long trek to start the fight again.

8 Wiggler

This Wiggler is steaming mad after Mario interrupts its sleep in Gelato Beach. He begins rampaging around as soon as Mario appears in his mission, terrorizing the beach-goers.

The way Mario has to attack is by shooting plants with water, allowing pits of sand to rise up and trip Wiggler, causing him to flip over onto his back and making him vulnerable to a well-placed Ground-Pound. However, in later phases of the fight, Wiggler tends to move faster and in different places. If he runs into Mario, he’ll send him flying away as well as damaging him.

7 Shadow Mario

Shadow Mario, or Bowser Jr., will always be the seventh mission in each stage, making Mario chase him around each area to stop him and recover a Shine Sprite. Shadow Mario will use the same moves Mario uses to scale different platforms and rooves to run away.

In the easier stages like Bianco Hills and Gelato Beach, Shadow Mario is not too tough; however, in places like Ricco Harbor, Serena Beach, and Noki Bay, he will take advantage of clones, high ground, and quick turns to confuse and cause Mario to go on a wild goose chase.

6 Plungelo

While not big-time bosses, initially, it can be a little confusing to take them down when there is more than one. The goal is to lure them to one side of the different mirrors shining a light on the middle section to get Wiggler off it.

Getting them on the same side in order to minimize damage taken is more difficult when it comes to the three that are walking on one side. This boss battle can be a little bit reliant on RNG, causing the difficulty to vary.

5 King Boo

King Boo, who is fought in the basement of Hotel Delfino, is Mario’s first direct interaction with King Boo. Water is ineffective, forcing him to spin the slot machine that King Boo summons in order to get ammunition for an attack.

Mario needs to spin for fruit, chucking a Red Pepper at King Boo's tongue to set it on fire. As the boss is stunned, you’ll need to toss another piece of fruit to do damage. The fight becomes trickier when it lands on things other than fruit, such as question marks, which could spawn random enemies or bubbles.

4 Eely-Mouth

Another underwater boss makes the list in the form of Eely-Mouth. The difference between this boss and most other underwater Mario bosses is that you also have to manage your health bar while fighting it. You can use F.L.U.D.D. to break poison bubbles and get air from them or move around the rather large underwater area and collect coins to refill your health.

You’ll have to get pretty close to Eely-Mouth to beat it, cleaning its teeth with your Hover Nozzle in order to calm it down. It can sometimes inhale, pulling Mario into its mouth before spitting him out. This could be the difference between life and death as you may have low health when it does this.

3 Bowser

Bowser, who is the final boss of Super Mario Sunshine, actually doesn’t get attacked physically, unlike in most of the other games. With his giant size, normal attacks are futile against him, leaving Mario to run around with another nozzle of his, the Rocket Nozzle.

Mario must move to different spots where he will shoot himself into the air and Ground-Pound down, destroying sides of the arena to eventually tip Bowser out of it. Meanwhile, Mario also has to make sure to steer clear of falling liquid, as well as scale the crumbling path before he himself falls in. Bowser Jr. will also be shooting Bullet Bills while Bowser breathes fire.

2 Mecha-Bowser

This is an infamous boss in the Super Mario franchise as a whole. Fought on a roller coaster, Mario has to use water missiles with F.L.U.U.D. to shoot the body of Mecha-Bowser, who will also be shooting Bullet Bills to chase Mario on his ride.

And yes, you are moving at high speeds while doing all this. It’s common to miss, especially from further away, and the Bullet Bills that chase Mario won’t take long to reach him, but they can be destroyed with water, just like the normal ones. When traveling closer to the machine, it will spit out fire, just like the real Bowser, but Mario can use his F.L.U.U.D. to quench the flames as he passes.

1 Phantamanta

Phantamanta is the first mission in Serena Beach and it is a doozy. Considered to be the hardest boss fight in Super Mario Sunshine, this ghost packs quite the punch. It starts off as one large enemy, covering wherever it goes in electric paint. As you hit Phantamanta with water, it will split into more and more ghosts, leaving smaller trails behind, as well as moving a lot faster.

When all of them are at their tiniest, they will turn pink and begin actively chasing Mario, rather than wandering around as they did before. They can throw Mario all over the place, including into electric goop, dealing more damage as a result.
