What to Expect From Destiny 2 in 2020 | Game Rant

2019 was a huge year for Bungie and its popular shooter Destiny 2. The year began with a shocking move as Activision and Bungie agreed to part ways, leaving the veteran studio to chart its own course with Destiny 2 and the future of the franchise. Bungie continued to deliver new seasonal content for the rest of the year and started its third year with a new expansion called Shadowkeep as well as a free to play version called New Light.

The Destiny 2 experience continued to evolve adding a cross save feature that let players take their characters to any of the compatible platforms. The seasonal structure also changed a bit as the cycle now aims to feature content and tell stories that are self contained inside of that time period. At the end of the season, certain content and loot are expired and replaced by new stuff when the next season begins.

However, many fans have begun to look ahead and try to piece what's next for Destiny 2 and Bungie. While much of the roadmap is shrouded in mystery, there are more than a few things fans can look forward to in 2020.

Currently, Destiny 2 is in the middle of the Season of Dawn. Players are able to help Osiris save the legendary Titan hero Saint-14, take part in his Sundial activity, as well as use Polarized Fractaline to calibrate four obelisks on various planets.

However, there's still about two months left in this season and plenty of new content still to come. Next week, players will get to experience a legendary version of the Sundial activity. As expected, the activity becomes more difficult and matchmaking is disabled. Interested players will need to first form a fireteam prior to joining the activity.

In February, the final boss of the Sundial becomes available to challenge. Not much is known about this boss character, but it's likely that Inotam may have access to all three elemental powers of the previous three boss characters. In addition, players who defeat Inotam on legendary difficulty will unlock the Legendary Psion Triumph, which is needed to unlock the Savior title.

Two exotic quests are also still to come in Season of Dawn including Devil's Ruin and Bastion. Devil's Ruin arrives on January 7 and is an exotic sidearm that sounds similar to Halo's plasma pistol. The weapon can fire individual bullets or be charged to fire a beam that is very effective against Unstoppable Champions. In addition, a fully charged laser blast also refills the magazines from reserves.

Bastion is the other exotic quest weapon this season. This fusion rifle is able to fire three spreads of kinetic slugs and many of them are able to penetrate elemental shields. Players can pick this quest up starting in February.

The last Season of Dawn addition also comes in February and remains the most mysterious. Known as the Empryean Foundation, much of what players know comes from the datamined Season of Dawn triumphs. Like the obelisks, players will be using Fractaline to restore the Foundation in some way. At some point, players will have some sort of beacon to light once the restoration effort is complete. Many have theorized that this could be one way Saint-14 brings back a version of the Trials of Osiris, a mode which many PvP players want to see make a return in Destiny 2.

The Valentine's Day inspired Crimson Days event is also scheduled for a return visit to the Tower from February 11 to 16. While the 2020 version has yet to be detailed by Bungie, the format is likely going to remain intact from previous years. That means players can complete special bounties to earn currency to be used on special in-game items, complete new triumphs, purchase new Valentine's Day themed items from the Eververse Store, and take part in the Crucible's Crimson Doubles playlist.

Beyond the current season, Bungie has confirmed another season. While the developer likely won't be discussing what it entails for at least a couple months, players may have already gleaned a few small details from the original Shadowkeep developer's diary.

In the trailer, it's revealed that the story Bungie set in motion inside of Season 9 won't see its final resolution until Season 11 arrives. This could mean a host of things including the return of the mysterious pyramid ships as well as the ending cutscene which showed Eris Morn absorbing some of the energy found within them.

Rumors and speculation also indicate that players could be working with Saint-14 to recreate some version of the Trials of Osiris, a popular weekend Crucible playlist that featured unique loot for players who were able to get 9 victories. According to some theories, the newly restored mode would then become available at the start of Season 11.

Unfortunately, outside of the three promised seasons that came with Shadowkeep's Digital Deluxe Edition, not much is known. It's highly unlikely that Bungie would stop producing content as the studio wouldn't want to lose its players in advance of a potential new expansion later this year or perhaps an eventual Destiny 3. In fact, many fans would point to a number of story lines that have yet to be resolved, such as the traitorous Uldren Sov being revived as a guardian, the Dreaming City's continued curse, the reappearance of the pyramid ships, and more. Could smaller seasons surrounding these plot threads be on the table beyond season 11?

As such, players should expect to see annual events like The Revelry in April or May as well as the Solstice of Heroes in August. It's entirely reasonable that the studio could also be winding down the amount of released content in an effort to place more focus on a dedicated sequel.

For those expecting to see a Destiny 3 later this year, the studio has already discussed the idea and has shot down rumors that a third game will be coming in 2020. For now, the focus remains on Destiny 2 and developing a story arc that continues to unfold over the course of each season. As such, fans will likely have to wait until 2021 at which point it can be safely assumed to be a next generation game.

Considering that Destiny 2 has taken on a more live-service format over the past year, players should expect to see a steady stream of content added to the game over the course of 2020, ensuring the player base remains healthy and strong.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
