Animal Crossing Fans Can Pre-Order Empty New Horizons Bundle Box
After Nintendo revealed an Animal Crossing: New Horizons-themed "Aloha Edition" Switch bundle Thursday, the Internet has been clamoring to get its hands on one. While there are Animal Crossing skins being sold to help interested parties avoid the $300 price tag, die-hard fans and collectors might still feel like they're missing out on the aesthetics of the bundle box.
That's where the Japanese My Nintendo Store comes into play by offering people the chance to pre-order an Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch bundle "vanity box." It's exactly what it sounds like: An unassembled, empty decorative bundle box that will be made available to order starting Saturday, February 8.
The vanity box is expected to be delivered on March 20, the same day that New Horizons will be available to purchase, just without the baby-blue Aloha Edition Switch and its accessories inside. What makes the offer potentially appealing to buyers is its 550 yen price tag, which translates to just over $5 for Animal Crossing fans in the States.
There have been a number of pieces of tie-in gear announced for the highly-anticipated next edition of Nintendo's long-running life simulation series. Some American retailers are offering different pre-order bonuses, while Japanese accessory manufacturer Hori is selling Animal Crossing tote bags and more bedazzled with images like the iconic green leaf.
However, nothing has created quite as much interest all across the Internet as the Aloha Edition Switch bundle. Even when more details about Animal Crossing: New Horizon's multiplayer constraints came to light through the game's listing by Nintendo Australia, people have not been able to stop talking about Tom Nook and his children hanging out on the newest bundle's pastel Switch dock.
It makes sense for Nintendo to be capitalizing on this fervor by offering up a cheaper alternative to buying an entire new Switch, even if the idea of owning an empty box might only appeal to die-hard collectors. Just owning the vanity box as decoration will not provide the benefits inherent to owning an extra device, like being able to open an extra Animal Crossing island.
At least the vanity box is only a $5 investment, so interested parties won't be hugely set back if they're looking to buy the new Animal Crossing separately next month. Even so, it's got to be one of the odder things for sale through official Nintendo channels.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons releases on March 20, 2020, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
