Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories Demo Available Now | Game Rant
Previously available only in Japan, the action-adventure survival game Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories will be releasing in North America and Europe on April 7, 2020. But in the meantime, a demo has been made available for players eager to get a taste of the game a bit sooner.
The demo for Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories for PS4 owners can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store, and the Nintendo Switch version can be found on the Nintendo eShop. A PC version of the demo will be released at a later date, as yet unannounced.
Developed and published by Granzella in Japan and published by NIS America for worldwide distribution, Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories puts players in control of a survivor of a massive earthquake in a Japanese city who finds himself near the epicenter of the disaster. It is up to the player to find fellow city dwellers and outlast the aftermath while surviving aftershocks, raging fires, and collapsing buildings and debris.
The previous three games in the Disaster Report series have featured a number of action sequences, but Summer Memories has gameplay elements that make it more akin to an adventure game. The story will progress by talking to other survivors, developing relationships with them, and hearing their personal stories.
Additionally, while previous titles have placed more focus on the games’ survival elements, requiring players to seek hydration and warmth, for example, Summer Memories makes these aspects of the game optional. The player character will still experience hunger, but ignoring it won’t inhibit progress through the story. And while going to the bathroom is possible and even recommended in order to increase the feeling of immersion and roleplay, players can choose to hold it until the very end of the game.
To increase the realism of the disaster response in a devastated Japanese city, game developers collaborated with the Kobe City Fire Bureau, which took the opportunity to advise players how civilians should react if caught in a real-life catastrophic event. Kobe was one of the cities most affected in the Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995, which measured 7.2 on the Richter scale.
When it launched in Japan on November 25, 2018, Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories became the third bestselling new release of the week, following Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! and Battlefield V. The game proved successful enough to warrant a worldwide release, and game director Kazuma Kujo has already stated that he is considering development of a fifth entry in the series.
