How to Fix the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Missing Villager Glitch
Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the latest title in Nintendo's island-management series, has been out for a week now, and already players are filling out their villages. While the main character of the Animal Crossing series spends a lot of time collecting bugs, fossils, and fish, the main focus of the game remains the villagers who move onto their island.
Unfortunately, a new glitch is permanently locking off one of the villager plots, preventing new residents from moving in. With only 10 spots available on each island, this is a real problem. Luckily, there is a way to restore it, allowing a new villager to claim the house.
The new bug, first discovered by Animal Crossing player Barnse and shared by CeciliaCrescent on the Bell Tree Forums, occurs when a player adopts a villager that has been forced off another player's island. Instead of them occupying the new plot, it will remain empty with the message "_'s New Home," with the evicted villager never arriving to fill it.
Although this isn't a very common set of circumstances, and villagers who've left other player's islands of their own accord aren't affected, no-one wants to lose one of their precious plots to a glitch. Nintendo are yet to release an official fix for the bug, but there is a way that players can unlock the plot themselves.
First, players will need to make sure they've got at least one plot open in addition to the glitched plot. Then, they should use Dodo airlines to go on an Island Tour and find a new villager to invite to stay. The new villager will now occupy the glitched plot, but it will keep the same appearance as the house of the bugged villager.
At this point, players will need to check their island to ensure a new house, which cannot be entered, has also appeared on the island. It should also show up as a large orange house symbol in the map key. Next, players should force the new villager to move out. This can be down through the Camp Grounds, or through a cheeky bit of Time Travel. Visit the new villager and check they are moving out, which should show as a sad expression and an exclamation mark above their head. Once they've gone, both of the houses should disappear, restoring the glitched plot.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available only for Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite.
