Pokemon GO Cancels Raid Day Because of World War 2 Mishap
March 1st marks a raid day for many Pokemon GO players. Many regions enjoyed the event, which featured raids for Gengar and Nidorino wearing party hats. However, some regions were not able to participate, possibly due to outdated maps.
Residents of Split, Croatia, were displeased to discover their raid day had been canceled. Apparently, the mapping system used in Pokemon GO uses large cells to determine regions. Split, Croatia, is grouped into a cell with Italy, which triggered some belief that Pokemon GO maps were from World War II, because Split was originally part of Italy, but annexed during the war.
Split now belongs to Croatia, but was not included in the Croatian raid day. The Reddit user who made the post also included the map cell that Pokemon GO reportedly used. It does appear to be a large cell because Split is located over 120 miles from Italy, across the Adriatic Sea. Many people are hoping the maps are fixed and the raid day will be made up.
If the mapping problem is fixed, residents of Split, Croatia will be able to participate in March's large slate of events in Pokemon GO. However, it seems that many other players have been experiencing problems due to the maps. Another Reddit user commented that as a resident of Newfoundland, they are unable to catch a Tauros, which is a North American exclusive. Some Pokemon are only found in certain parts of the world, but some locations are not designated to a particular region, therefore, players are missing out on Pokemon.
The flawed mapping system can potentially cause certain regions to have an advantage in the game. Currently, there is a lot of region-specific Pokemon and more are always being added. Niantic may fix the problem by updating maps or changing the cells in the map to be more specific. It is most likely not the case that Niantic is using maps from World War II, or that they are unaware of the country that Split belongs to, but no official statement has been made yet regarding this error.
However, Niantic has been known to fix Pokemon GO problems in a timely manner. There are still two weeks left until the March Community Day, which gives trainers a few hours to catch the psychic Pokemon Abra with an increased chance to encounter a shiny version. Hopefully, Split and Newfoundland will be designated to the appropriate regions and players there will be able to participate in the coming events.
Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
