Someone Climbed Half Life: Alyx’s Citadel Promo Area

There are many very excited Valve fans looking forward to the release of Half-Life: Alyx. Virtual Reality won't stop these fans, who have been waiting over a decade for the next major Half-Life game. Some are struggling with their excess energy, and are finding interesting ways to express their excitement for Half-Life: Alyx leading up to the game's launch on March 23. One excellent example is a Youtuber who climbed to the top of Half-Life: Alyx's Citadel.

Youtuber 3kliksphilip took on the extraordinary task for himself. He discovered a unique trick in the OpenVR SDK that allows him to move forward in virtual reality spaces. Double tapping the "Home" button on either controller allows the user to pull themselves forward. It's a bit of a physical effort, but it works great for exploring static VR environments. Coincidentally, Valve recently released a static VR space featuring Half-Life: Alyx's Citadel, designed for Steam VR's home space.

The space provided by Steam places the VR user in a small town area with the Citadel relatively far in the distance, where it's not meant to be explored, simply intended to immerse the VR user in an environment from the game. Using the OpenVR feature that allows him to pull his way through the environment.

It's unclear whether 3klikphilip decided to climb to the top of the Citadel as he was exploring the environment or before he even started. Regardless, that's exactly what he did, pulling himself along the way one hand over another.

It's unclear exactly how long it took 3klikphilip to reach the "top" of the tower, as the video skips around quite a bit. It's obvious that it took a very long time, however. It's impressive that the Youtuber dedicated themself to the effort. After all, it's not intended to be explored this way, so the world fades away as 3klikphilip gets closer to the goal. There's no reward at the end, and no secrets. It's just a good feeling of setting a goal and seeing it complete.

As should be abundantly clear, Half-Life has some very dedicated fans that have been waiting a very long time for more Half-Life content. It's to a point where someone will take a cool environmental scene and explore it beyond rationality. Some might view Half-Life: Alyx's shift to virtual reality as needlessly exclusive, but others are clearly very excited about the possibilities it will make available to them. With just a single scene, Half-Life fans are more immersed in the experience than ever.
