10 Tips To Make An Overpowered Character In One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is the newest entry in a long line of pretty fantastic anime-centric games. Musou, of course, is a genre known to the masses primarily thanks to series like Dynasty Warriors. In it, there is a staggering amount of characters to play as. Each and every one of them can clear mobs and missions with ease given a certain amount of time to learn their mechanics.
But some of them require more work than others, and to help cover our bases, we're going to go over the biggest tips we could think of to help you make that character you love so much from the series capable of beating even the New World Emperors.
10 Max Out That General Map Immediately
First and foremost, know this, the Beginning Map is a skill "tree" shared by every character. The stats that are leveled up in this map are then leveled up for every new character you unlock. This is a fantastic way of circumventing the problem where people would unlock characters in previous games and either pay in-game currency to auto-level them or grind them up on the early missions. Neither of these were fun to do, but now people can jump right in with their new unlock right away!
9 Then Max Out The Combo Additions And Skill Point Islands
Although, we don't recommend hopping right in with newly unlocked characters. First, save up a bit of Beri and unlock all their Action Growth and Skill Slot islands. They don't cost many coins or gold to unlock, and it really opens them up playstyle wise. Honestly, we'd recommend grabbing a few of their specials as well, but you don't really get that many expendable resources until about halfway through Dramatic Log or so. Adding onto their combo's really changes most character's playstyle, such as adding more "Scope" enders to Choppers combo's or letting Bege summon more of his crew.
8 Test Each Special And How Well It Flows In A Combo
Some of the Specials are either deceptively good or surprisingly bad. Take Bartolomeo's ball-throwing Special for example. If he manages to hit an Elite NPC, this fake-out move can take out a good chunk or straight up all of their health. But, if he throws it into a crowd, odds are it's hitting a weak mob instead. And, crowds are sort of everywhere in Musou games.
Now, take Kidd's Pillar special instead, on the surface it just builds a weird tower of metal that blocks enemies a tad. But, if you use his "Repel" move anywhere near it, it launches metal in every direction and adds a big chunk of damage on top of his Repelled metal fists. Some are perfect to dash out of before they finish, others require you to wait a bit before you can move. It's exactly why testing each one is pretty important.
7 Unlock All The Skills That Most Character-Specific Maps Have
So, other than the Beginning Map, most other attributes unlocked are specific to that one character. It's what makes Beri's all the more desirable in this game, rather than just serving as Level-Up fuel in PW3. But, one other thing that does get shared is the skills. These are the islands on their maps that have a "sun" icon on them. The Majority of the characters only have one, and it's always on their Level 1 Map. We absolutely recommend new players save up the gold, and then go through and level each character until they can grab their unique Skill. Why is it so important? Well, skills like Coin Collector, Cat Burglar, and Brother's Sake Cups are crucially important to get early for those who want to max out their coins, money, and crew levels as quickly as possible.
6 Adapt To The Character's Specialization
Pirate Warriors has always had a specialization or "class" system of sorts. Basically, characters would be categorized into different archetypes, much like a fighting game, based on how they fought or performed in the actual One Piece source material. Usopp fights from afar and plants traps, so he's a technical character. Carrot is known for her Speed, so she's speed type. Doflamingo usually flies, so he's sky type And Luffy brute forces his way through like a Power Type. The key to making any character overpowered is adjusting your playstyle to that "class".
Don't spam the same combo as Timeskip Usopp, Plant your Pop Greens and use them well. You have to learn air combos as Reiju, or dash-cancel with Sanji, even just learning which attacks are Smash Attacks as Kidd.
5 Use Transformations And Ultra Specials Often
Here's one thing we sort of dislike about Pirate Warriors 4, the overdependence on Ultra Specials as we'll call them. These are the Special Moves that do a huge chunk of damage and usually have a cinematic associated with them. In previous games, they were called Ultimate Attacks, and most characters had a Level 1 and Level 2 version of them. Now, players can equip four if they want. It's one of the many new things this sequel adds to the formula. Additionally, Form Changes now exist with Soul-Possessed Big Mom and Boundman Luffy, so learn to use those well. After maxing everyone out, we found the best average loadout was two Ultra Attacks, a counter special, and a full-force burst or transformation.
4 See If Your Character Has A Counter Special
Speaking of Counter Specials, don't sleep on them. A lot of characters have them, and most of them are absurdly strong. Without Bartolomeo's counter, the guy would be even farther down on the tier list than he already is. Capone's does a shocking amount of damage, Jiimbe's allows him to make up for his slow attack speed, and Basil Hawkins can even heal from his. Most of these don't activate until a certain "threshold" of damage in a single move has been passed. So the riff-raff mobs will rarely set them off.
3 Learn To Juggle And Infinite Combo
We mentioned it while talking about the Speed class, but Dash Canceling is pretty crucial in PW4. In previous games, players could dash in the middle of a combo string, then finish it with an ender after said dash. This allowed players to re-adust their enders so they wouldn't miss if an Elite NPC happened to move.
In PW4, that's no longer an option, but Power Dashes now count as "hitting" the opponent and are quick enough to allow players to chain together seemingly infinite combos. And, with the new Guard meter that Bosses and Elites have, being able to keep them up in the air as long as possible is mandatory if you want to get them out of the way before they counterattack.
2 Play Through All Of Dramatic Log For Necessary Skills And Coin Unlocks
This might seem odd, but playing through most of the Dramatic Log, which is the Story Mode, is pretty crucial for a lot of things. One, it unlocks a ton of Gold Coins that are necessary for strong Special Attacks and skills, Two it unlocks most of the cast. And Three, it brings in the Beri! Players need hundreds upon hundreds of the bags of Beri's Coin to unlock the skill slots and Combo Additions for all the cast, and a completely Dramatic Log is the best way to do it. Plus, the further along you get, the more of the question marks on certain character maps get cleared up.
1 Grab Their Necessary Gold Coins In The Treasure Log
And lastly, keep an eye out for certain Gold Coins. The Treasure Log is the place where most of the tertiary characters will unlock their late-map skills as each mission rewards a Gold Coin of a different type upon completion. And, knowing the source material is actually helpful here as Question Mark Islands are usually coins that haven't been discovered but are relevant to the character themselves. Like with Bartolomeo, a lot of his late Skill-Map islands need Gold Coins related to Luffy such as his Straw Hat and his Jolly Roger. Grind out those Treasure Log missions and your favorite character will be clearing out grunts by the thousands sooner than you expect!
