Uncharted Voice Actor Nolan North Doesn't See Mark Wahlberg as Sully
Nolan North, the voice actor behind Uncharted's protagonist Nathan Drake, doesn't see Mark Wahlberg as Sully, Nathan Drake's mentor from the game series. During an episode of Retro Replay, a video game channel North created alongside Troy Baker, yet another voice actor, North spoke about the decision.
North and Baker had been discussing the upcoming adaptation of The Last of Us to HBO, written by Craig Mazin, who also worked on the Chernobyl series. North expressed that he was more excited about The Last of Us becoming a series than he was about the Uncharted film, which has been something of a rollercoaster ride as far as production is concerned. North then went on to state, "I love Mark Wahlberg, but I don't see him as Sully. I just don't see that as Sully."
Originally, Wahlberg had been cast as Nathan Drake, but production has gone on so long that Whalberg was recast as Sully. Now, Tom Holland is set to play the role of Nathan Drake in the Uncharted film. Casting decisions on the Uncharted film have been criticized fairly heavily, with North only being one of many who have voiced concerns over such decisions.
Recently, the Uncharted film was delayed due to the coronavirus, with Sony pushing back many of its films to next year and beyond. The movie has been in development for more than a decade now, despite still being in its pre-production phase. In that time, the movie has continuously shifted directors, losing Travis Knight last year. The film was meant to begin shooting in March, but that was pushed back due to the pandemic.
Nolan North's concerns are shared by many, and with the film being trapped in development hell, there's plenty of cause for concern. It's set as a prequel to the main games, with Tom Holland meant to be a younger version of Nathan Drake than fans are used to seeing, though both Uncharted 3 and Uncharted 4 feature sequences with an adolescent Drake.
Tom Holland is a well-liked actor thanks to his role as Spider-Man in the MCU, so it's possible his charisma is able to save the film should it receive less than stellar reviews. Video game movies have become increasingly popular, so it's possible that the film will land with audiences after all.
Uncharted is set to release on October 8, 2021.
