Beautiful Fan Remake of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Receives New Update
One of the most well-received and well-loved video games of the 1990s, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, was given a fan remake by CryZenX in 2015. As of April 2020, CryZenX's remake was given a dazzling new update that brings new life (and graphics) to this classic Zelda game.
CryZenX remade the game using the Unreal 4 engine, which has been used for other gorgeous graphic remakes such as Fable: The Lost Chapters. Nintendo has applied HD re-releases to its games in the past, but neither the game company itself nor any of the fans have attempted such an extensive remastering as this one before.
The fan creator posts videos on their YouTube channel of the updates as they are created. The most recent video was uploaded on April 12, featuring a walkthrough throughout the project and showcasing many of the improved graphics. CryZenX also hosts a Discord server that allow eager fans to ask questions about what's coming next for the project. The server also includes free links to people who want to play a demo of the fan remake.
This isn't CryZenX's only remake project in Unreal 4. In 2015, the creator uploaded a video of what Pokemon might look like if it were a console game. Both Pokemon and Ocarina of Time look stellar with their updated graphics, and it's not hard to imagine how great the games could look if a full team took on the projects. With how much video game graphics have improved since the 1990s, fans's expectations have risen of what a well-made game looks like.
Ocarina of Time is an impressive game, especially for its time. Many fans of the series look back on the game fondly. The fact that a fan is passionate about the game to spend years remaking it is proof that Ocarina of Time is an incredibly important game for many people.
However, the big question that has to be asked is what Nintendo will think of this remake, especially as CryZenX is linking to free (updated) portions of the game. When the remake was updated in 2018, Nintendo removed a video of the remastered Kokiri Forest. However, some people have been calling for Nintendo themselves to remake the game beyond its port to the 3DS in 2011. Is it time for the game to receive the Link's Awakening treatment? Nothing is for certain yet, but fans are certainly hungry for something, whether it's official or fan-made.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is available for Nintendo 64, and the mod is available for PC.
