Destiny 2 Cutscene Confirms Major Event is Near | Game Rant
Destiny 2 hasn’t been in the best place lately when it comes to fresh content. The general consensus seems to be that the current Season of the Worthy hasn’t done much to maintain interest, leading to more players ditching the game. But a new datamine suggests that that won’t be the case for long, because it looks like something big is on the horizon for Destiny, something the series has been teasing for months now.
Ever since last fall’s Shadowkeep expansion got the ball rolling, it’s become pretty clear that D2’s overarching plot is finally gearing up to set players against the franchise’s central threat, the Darkness. This month, in particular, has seen a growing number of in-game teases and leaks that suggest that the battle with the Darkness will be the central focus of Destiny 2’s next season (SPOILERS AHEAD).
Further evidence of this comes courtesy of dataminer Ginsor, who uncovered a new cutscene inside the files for today’s new 2.8.1 update. Said cutscene is simple and very brief, but its significance to Destiny 2's story makes up for that. It begins with a quick sequence of zoom-in shots of Jupiter, getting closer and closer until a large pyramid-shaped silhouette can be seen emerging from the planet’s shadow, at which point it suddenly cuts to black.
Players have known for a couple of weeks now that the Darkness was starting to close in, ever since the cutscene inside Rasputin’s recently-added bunker on Io revealed that the pyramids had entered Pluto’s orbit. It was clear then that it wouldn’t be long before they reached Earth, but now that they’ve already made it to Jupiter, it's all but guaranteed now that the Darkness will arrive sooner rather than later.
Beyond that, though, one can only guess what’ll happen when the pyramids finally come. Multiple leaks about it have come out in the past week alone, yet many of the claims in these contradict each other to the point that it’s hard to tell which ones could possibly be legit. These include an impending “Collapse” for humanity, Darkness-based subclasses, and an assortment of new activities including an “Expedition” into the pyramid inside the moon.
There’s also the question of the Almighty, the colossal sun-destroying vessel that’s currently on a literal collision course with Earth. As of this writing, it’s unknown how Bungie intends to tie up that plot thread, or whether it will tie into the pyramids’ approach at all. But whatever happens, it sure looks like these, along with the other plot threads that have been touched upon in activities like the Corridors of Time and Trials of Osiris, will make Destiny 2 much more interesting in the near future, narratively-speaking.
Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
