Microsoft Executive Believes Xbox Series X is the 'Better Console'
Bill Stillwell, a former Microsoft executive, claimed in a recent interview that Microsoft has the better console in regards to Sony's PS5. The Xbox Series X is statistically more powerful in terms of hardware than the PlayStation 5, but there are a lot of other factors to consider when making this kind of claim.
Even so, Stillwell says he isn't worried about the "power narrative" simply because the Xbox Series X is better than Sony's. Stillwell has worked for Microsoft since 2000 and has worked on the Xbox for about eight years. He has recently left Xbox to move to the augmented reality division of Microsoft, but is still a credible voice on the topic.
The claim has certainly riled some PlayStation fans up, as there wasn't much to back it up aside from its supposed superiority. Furthermore, saying that the power narrative doesn't matter is a strange argument given that they are the ones with the more powerful console.
Much of this conversation was in response to the recent Crytek engineer's claim that the PS5 is easier to code on. The interview in which Ali Salehi made this assertion has since been redacted, although the reason for this removal is unclear. It is most likely that Crytek doesn't want to condone any sort of official opinion on which console it prefers over the other, but there are also rumors that Salehi may have broken a non-disclosure agreement or was even fired as a result of his comment. Of course, these are all just rumors and should be taken as such.
Ultimately, the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 are going to be different consoles, but it is unlikely that there will be a clear cut answer for which is better. Each will have strengths and weakness based on what Microsoft and Sony decide to focus on, and each will do well on the market. Much of a console's success comes from brand loyalty more than it does specs and performance, as the average user doesn't know too much about that sort of thing. To make any judgement now before seeing both consoles in action is simply jumping the gun too early.
Still, between Salehi's Crytek interview claims and Stillwell's more recent boasting about the Xbox Series X, it seems tensions are somewhat high as the next generation of gaming approaches. Both sides are eager to prove to fans that their console is superior, but given that both consoles are still in development, neither can say too much about what makes their console unique.
The Xbox Series X is slated to release this holiday season.
