The Shining Spin-Off Series in Development for HBO Max
Horror fans will be glad to know that the legendary Overlook Hotel will soon be making a return to video screens, but this time to television. HBO Max has revealed that it has cemented a deal to create Overlook, a one-hour drama revisiting the iconic location from Stephen King's The Shining.
The Shining, which released as a novel in 1977, was subsequently made into a film in 1980 and - in addition to remakes - has since seen offshoots like the Rose Red mini-series and last year's Doctor Sleep, which acts as a sequel to the original novel.
Now, HBO Max's Overlook will return to the haunted hotel and will feature characters previously seen in The Shining. According to the press release, "Overlook explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction." Overlook will be produced by J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath’s Bad Robot Productions. Abrams and Ben Stephenson will serve as its executive producers.
At this time, there's no further information as to who will star in Overlook or when it will premiere. However, given current restrictions on filming due to the COVID-19 outbreak, it will likely be some time yet before Overlook can get the ball rolling and actually begin filming, so fans can likely expect to see the show begin at the very earliest by 2021.
HBO Max's Overlook does not yet have a start date.
