Latest PS4 System Update 7.5 is Causing Problems for Some Players

Sony is no doubt in the midst of gearing up for the full unveiling of the PlayStation 5, as many PlayStation fans eagerly await more news regarding the new console. Sony seems to be drip-feeding information slowly, as the company only just revealed the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller and the features it comes with.

However, while Sony may be busy planning out the PS5’s information roll-out, the PS4 is still seeing system updates that intend to improve the console’s stability and performance. Unfortunately, the latest system update seems to be causing a myriad of problems for a portion of the user-base.

As some PlayStation 4 owners may know, Sony recently rolled out a system update to very little fanfare. The update, which was labeled as the PS4 System Update 7.5, only received a single patch note saying “this system software update improves system performance.” As many players who still own the standard and slim PS4’s can attest to, the system can have a tendency to make a lot of noise and generate a lot of heat while playing many of the platform’s more taxing games.

Unfortunately, some players are reporting that this system update is doing the exact opposite of improving system performance, and is instead bricking their systems altogether or causing error messages. Many PS4 owners have taken to Reddit to detail the problems they’ve encountered since installing the update, including disk drive errors, infinite boot loops, and random crashing. It’s strange seeing as this update began beta testing all the way back in February.

One thread on Reddit is populated with users sharing their experiences after installing the update. Many users are experiencing the SU-42118-6 error message, which is an issue regarding the PS4’s Blu-Ray drive that prevents updates from installing. Others who have successfully installed the update have claimed it forced their systems into safe mode only to cause an infinite boot loop that locks the system into said mode. Issues include random, intermittent crashes, slower performance, and internet connectivity issues.

The fact that this issue is affecting many players during quarantine is no doubt exacerbating the stressful situation. Additionally, the quarantine is also affecting Sony in more ways than one, with the company recently slowing PS4 download speeds worldwide in an attempt to deal with the influx of player activity on the platform. While this situation is incredibly frustrating for those users who have been affected, this is not the first time an update has caused issues for users. With any luck, Sony will roll out another update to remedy the issues caused by this most recent update.
