Twitch Sets New Viewership Records | Game Rant
Many gamers who are home due to self-isolation are turning to the Twitch streaming service, reportedly. So many viewers are watching Twitch right now that the streaming platform has set a record for hours viewed. According to StreamLabs, a partner app for Twitch streamers, Twitch surpassed 3.1 billion in hours watched over the past three months.
Compared to the past quarter in 2019, Twitch's viewership has risen 17% overall. It's not just viewership numbers increasing, though. There are a huge number of streamers hoping to capitalize on the Twitch boon. A 33% increase in unique channels on Twitch was recorded. There's no telling how viewership is spread across all those channels, however.
The result is that Twitch remains the most dominant streaming platform by far. Twitch secured 65% of overall hours watched in the past quarter, with YouTube Gaming taking second with 22%. Twitch also dominated in hours streamed, with 72% next to runner up Mixer's 17%. Twitch's domination of the streaming platform wars continues.
It's not all bad news for other streaming platforms, however. Both YouTube Gaming and Facebook are overperforming with regards to their hours streamed to hours watched ratio. And while Mixer viewership may be very low comparatively, it's very promising that Mixer has 36% of the overall unique streaming channels to Twitch's 55%. Facebook, Mixer, and YouTube all saw viewership increases in the last quarter, though.
It's unfortunate that Twitch and other platforms are seeing such gains as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it's good to see gamers coming together during the crisis.
