Logan Director Confirms Hugh Jackman Never Wore Wolverine Mask
Logan director James Mangold recently shared the original test footage of the movie's opening scene via Twitter, and revealed some interesting information about the character of Wolverine at the same time.
During ComicBook.com's Quaratine Watch Party, Mangold tweeted out the previsualization version of that opening scene in which Logan appears to be violently beaten by a gang, though he soon gets up and rips them apart, Wolverine-style. However, Logan almost had a completely different opening scene that would've shown the X-Men being slaughtered, though Mangold explained both why this didn't end up going through and why Logan never wears his traditional Wolverine outfit.
In answering why Logan's original opening scene was scrapped for the one now included in the final cut of the movie, Mangold wrote, "It made the movie about the X-Men, instead of being about Logan and Charles. And irrevocably, when you read the script opening that way, it became about this other tragedy, as opposed to that tragedy being something hovering like a shadow in the background for these characters."
Furthermore, when asked if Logan ever wore the Wolverine mask at any point throughout the entire series of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Mangold confirmed that he had not. When explaining why, Mangold replied that it never seemed to suit Logan's character, though that wouldn't necessarily prevent future incarnations of Wolverine from doing so.
Now that Logan has been released (and fully explained), it seems as though the next incarnation of the X-Men may be making their debut in the MCU, as Hugh Jackman is entirely done as Wolverine. What that will entail will likely not be revealed for years down the line, as Marvel is still at work on phase 4.
