The Matrix 4 May Start Filming This Summer | Game Rant
Warner Bros. is looking to restart production for The Matrix 4 in early July after production was halted in March due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in Germany. The studio has signed the cast to eight-week contract extensions and plans to resume filming by July 6.
The fourth installment in the wildly successful series is once again being helmed by Lana Wachowski and is tentatively scheduled for release in 2021. An exact date for the film has not been announced yet and it is still unknown what effect if any that the current health crisis will have on the release. Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Lambert Wilson will return in their respective roles and will be joined by franchise freshmen Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Neil Patrick Harris.
The Matrix 4 was announced in August 2019 and shooting kicked off in February 2020 in San Francisco. Unfortunately, work was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic before the production was scheduled to move to Berlin. The franchise has grossed over $1.6 billion and been an inspiration for a generation of new filmmakers.
The script, written by Wachowski along with authors Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell, is still a mystery, and fans are eagerly awaiting any plot details that may emerge prior to the film’s opening. Mitchell and Wachowski previously teamed up for the 2012 film adaptation of his book, Cloud Atlas. After a string of critical and commercial duds, Wachowski is hoping that a return to her landmark work will reinvigorate an innovative and boundary-pushing career.
The Matrix 4 is slated for release in 2021 from Village Roadshow and Silver Pictures and will be distributed by Warner Bros.
