Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Who Are Reese and Cyrus?
Animal Crossing: New Horizons brought many new things for players to do in the month of June. First, the game updated its list of fish and bugs for players to catch, and those living in the Northern Hemisphere will finally have access to a wide variety of sharks that will surely bring tons of Bells when sold to Timmy and Tommy Nook.
The new month also brought about several new events, with the biggest one being the Wedding season. Although players won't be able to get married themselves, the Wedding event brought back Reese and Cyrus to the game, and players are tasked in taking their anniversary photograph at Harvey's island studio Photopia. Of course, the couple is already familiar to most Animal Crossing fans, but for newcomers to the franchise, here is a breakdown of Reese and Cyrus' history in Animal Crossing.
To the uninitiated, Reese and Cyrus are special characters in Animal Crossing who first appeared in New Leaf. Both characters are alpacas and were introduced as a married couple apart from also being business partners. In terms of character design, Reese features pink hair, black eyes, pink lipstick, and blush. Normally, she wears a red apron with a pink heart and blue crosses that resemble stitches. On the other hand, Cyrus is mostly blue, and his hairstyle is similar to the regent wig item and wears a blue apron that is similarly designed to that of Reese.
In terms of personality, Reese is generally kind and loving and would always help customers and villagers by purchasing things from them. She is also somewhat protective of her husband and would sometimes get jealous when other girls adore him. Interestingly enough, Cyrus is also protective of his wife, and he would even warn male characters about talking to Reese too much. He is also a talented builder that likes working on furniture.
In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Reese and Cyrus co-owns the store Re-Tail, which is a new establishment that debuted in the game. For those unfamiliar, Reese and Cyrus will buy items off the player for their full value. A chalkboard located just outside the store lists all the premium items that the couple will purchase from the player for double the price, which is similar to what Nook's Cranny is doing now with its hot item for the day in New Horizons.
Players can also purchase items from the store, but once an item is sold, they do not fill up again unless the player or other villagers put up items that they want Re-Tail to sell. Unlike the Nookling Stores, players can also sell almost anything at Re-Tail, including unnecessary objects that players no longer need, which include tools and unappraised fossils. Trash can also be sold at Re-Tail for a fee of 80 Bells per item.
Reese is also the point person for the stalk market and gives players the current market value of turnips in the morning and afternoon once prices change. Whenever the player decides to sell their turnips, they just have to check in with Reese, and she will purchase those turnips according to the most recent price of turnips. On the other hand, Cyrus offers services of upholstering and altering furniture. At the beginning of the game, these services are unavailable until the player has met the following conditions:
- 100,000 Bells worth of items have been sold to Reese
- 50 pieces of furniture have been cataloged
- 10 pieces of clothing cataloged
- The player has played for seven days
Additionally, Cyrus can customize furniture with either pre-selected designs or custom patterns. A specific set of furniture can also be customized using an ore that will result in a shiny metallic, or crystal appearance, depending on the ore used. To add to that, Cyrus can also create unique items that can't be found anywhere else such as miniature fossil models, music boxes, and gold series furniture.
Currently, players can only interact with Reese and Cyrus during the wedding season, which falls in the month of June. As previously mentioned, the couple can be found in Harvey's island where the player is tasked to take anniversary photographs of the couple. For every photograph taken, Reese will provide players with Heart Crystals, which is a currency that can be exchanged for special Wedding Season items with Cyrus. During the first shoot, players will only be able to use Heart Crystals to purchase five special items, but Cyrus' inventory will expand as more photos are taken. All in all, there are 26 Wedding Season items that players can obtain in the game.
Unfortunately, it appears that Reese and Cyrus' role in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is only limited to the player taking their photos and trading Heart Crystals for special items. Although it is not impossible, it appears that Re-Tail won't be returning to New Horizons in a future update, given that most of its functions and services were already delegated elsewhere. Customizing furniture can now be done by players themselves, and the buying of turnips is now managed by Nook's Cranny. Of course, Animal Crossing: New Horizons can still re-introduce Re-Tail that will offer a new service or as a venue for players and other villagers to resell items they no longer need, especially since New Horizons only features one store in the island.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out now for the Nintendo Switch.
