Summer Games Done Quick 2020 is Going Online | Game Rant
Summer Games Done Quick, the annual video game speedrunning charity event, has made the difficult decision to cancel this year's show. However, while the on-site show is canceled, it's being replaced by an entirely online alternative. A group of hosts will broadcast SGDQ from a home studio, with speedrunners performing from home.
The new SGDQ Online event is dedicated to maintaining the same schedule and ideals of the IRL event. It'll run from August 16 through August 23, just like the original SGDQ (after it was postponed). It'll also support the Doctors Without Borders charity, just like SGDQ does every year. Hopefully, it'll also reach the same donation levels as it does each year, too.
To accommodate any issues that the change might crop up, SGDQ is reopening its submissions for speedruns. This way, those who submitted for a live speedrun can verify whether they're able to do it online, plus those who weren't able to do their runs live but can do it via livestream all have the same opportunity. The result is that SGDQ may be one of the most special charity marathons put on by the Games Done Quick team yet.
The reason for the cancellation should be self-evident. The COVID-19 pandemic remains a substantial threat across the United States and unfortunately appears as if it will last through the next several months. Given the kind of crowd that gathers for SGDQ each year, canceling the live event is a safe decision. Perhaps conditions will be better when Awesome Games Done Quick loops around again.
SDGQ Online begins on August 16 at 8:30 am PT.
