Batwoman Showrunner Reveals Why Kate Kane Wasn't Re-Cast
After Ruby Rose decided to leave her post as Kate Kane from The CW's Batwoman due to the long hours of its production schedule, it was announced that a new lead character will be hired for Season 2. Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries said they were originally going to replace Kane, but decided not to go in the direction of a "soap opera" version of the show.
During a discussion with producer Julie Plec as part of the ATX Television Festival this weekend reported by Give Me My Remote, Dries said she and Greg Berlanti decided to reboot Batwoman to "respect everything that Ruby put into the Kate Kane character." Dries also feels that having a new character in the DC Comics' Arrowverse show will help audiences transition without addressing an "elephant in the room."
A leaked casting call has suggested the new Batwoman will be a character named Ryan Wilder, and in this discussion Dries said she is "inventing a whole new character" who was at one point inspired by Kane's Batwoman. There are a number of ways the show could write out its previous lead, but it has been confirmed by Warner Bros. and the leaked casting call that her replacement will be a highly-skilled fighter who fits an LGBTQ demographic like Kane.
Though Batwoman will be getting a second season, it's unclear how the cast shake-up will affect plans like an Arrowverse crossover focusing on Batwoman and Superman. At this point, fans will just have to wait and see who takes on the mantle in Rose's absence.
Batwoman is currently airing on The CW.
