Evil Genius 2: World Domination Gets First Gameplay Trailer
What do you get when you combine a 1960s spy thriller with a classic management sim? Evil Genius 2: World Domination, the sequel to the 2004 cult classic Evil Genius, just got an official gameplay trailer.
The upcoming game will let players build an evil lair, train and recruit minions, and fight off invading forces, all from the perspective of an affably evil supervillain. The cartoonish style and tongue-in-cheek genre humor of the trailer are reminiscent of Team Fortress 2. Sure, players are attempting to defeat the good guys and possibly even take over the world, but they're doing so in a cheery, colorful world that looks about as violent as Zoo Tycoon.
This trailer is a follow-up to E3 2019's Evil Genius 2 reveal trailer, where its jack-of-all-trades developer Rebellion unveiled the long-awaited sequel. Rebellion announced the project back in 2017, but stayed pretty quiet until the first trailer came out. The gameplay trailer follows the same sort of theme as the game, by revealing parts of the game with a series of files entitled "How to Take Over the World."
Evil Genius 2 is a villain protagonist game, but not in the grimdark style of games like Tyranny. Most games that follow the villain tend to be violent, dark, and dramatic. Evil Genius 2 and its predecessor focus less on the murdering-the-good-guys side of things and more on recruiting goofy-looking "special henchmen" and, as with all management sims, placing every room in the optimal place (and then obsessively re-placing it).
Although a very different game tonally, fellow villain protagonist game Iratus: Lord of the Dead has recently been well-received. And management sims like RimWorld and Cities: Skylines often do well, especially when they have a unique concept. The gameplay trailer for Evil Genius 2 looks distinctive and just plain fun. Players will have to wait until later in 2020 to see for themselves.
Evil Genius 2: World Domination will be available in 2020 for PC.
