Mortal Shell Gets Brutal New Gameplay Trailer | Game Rant

Adding on to the list of new releases for next-generation consoles, Mortal Shell hopes to show off the gory side of what the systems will have to offer.

Mortal Shell is an action-RPG game developed by Cold Symmetry, a new game studio that was founded in 2017, for both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Mortal Shell will be Cold Symmetry's debut title as a studio comprised of professionals who have an extensive background working on AAA titles.

The game takes place in a darker setting and pits players against a treacherous environment to test their skills to the extreme against unforgiving environments and enemies. Today, Cold Symmetry dropped off a new gameplay trailer on YouTube that hopes to show off its unique gameplay style and tone.

Gamers will play as a vivacious spirit that takes control of defeated warriors called a "Mortal Shell" to obtain their skills and weapon experience. For this specific trailer, Cold Symmetry shows off a new unnamed combat class "shell" that players control that fights with what seems like a dual-wielding ax.

This trailer also shows that this combat class can turn into a cloud of dust to evade enemies and conjure a shield to defend themselves. Fans will even notice a spirit projection that shoots out of the controlled player's body that assists them in battle. However, it is unclear if that is specific to this combat class or if that is a general ability that can be used with all shells.

As much as this phrase gets thrown around when describing games, Mortal Shell does have a considerable resemblance to Dark Souls in terms of tone and aesthetic. Unlike the many games that cluster the Souls-like market, hopefully, the soul swapping mechanic will separate Mortal Shell from the others and distinguish itself as its own individual title. It's not hard to make a videogame soul-crushingly difficult. Still, the real challenge is to make the game's mechanics complement the difficulty so that it's up to the player's skill level in order to progress, and not because of cheaply overpowered enemies.

Mortal Shell is set to release in 2021 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series x
