Figma is Releasing Mini Sega Console Replicas | Game Rant

Anyone nostalgic for old-school video game consoles has had a lot of options to satisfy their itch in recent years, be it through devices like the now-discontinued NES and SNES Classics, or through merchandise like Nintendo's LEGO NES set. To celebrate Sega's 60th anniversary, popular figurine developer Figma is offering fans of the company's storied history the chance to purchase replica consoles that can be used by the figures they already own.

The set of figmaPLUS replicas that are currently available to pre-order through the Good Smile Company until September 24, 2020, includes Japanese versions of the Master System, Mega Drive (Genesis), Game Gear, Saturn, and Dreamcast. Each classic Sega console also comes with a miniature game representing its offerings, a controller, and the set includes three pairs of hands that can be placed in any Figma so they can properly pose.

Figma's line of games includes the Mega Drive's Sonic the Hedgehog, the Dreamcast's Space Channel 5, and the Sega Saturn's Virtua Fighter, which inspired NetherReam Studios' Ed Boon. The set costs ¥3,273 ($35 in the United States) and will be released in December from manufacturer Max Factory, according to the Good Smile Company's listings for the product. The pre-order bonus includes an additional Mega Drive controller and a set of hands.

Sega became a third-party developer after it moved away from console manufacturing following the Dreamcast, but the consoles it created and the series which were produced on them are still popular. Sonic the Hedgehog is the most notable franchise that emerged from Sega hardware, as it even out-sold Mario during that early period, but another game highlighted by the Figma set is Alex Kidd in Miracle World, which is being remade in 2021.

This year is Sega's 60th anniversary, but it is also a big anniversary for the Game Gear — which appears in Figma's set alongside the puzzle title Puyo Puyo. Sega announced new handheld Game Gear Micros to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the handheld console, which was overshadowed by Nintendo's Game Boy soon after it released.

Many people are currently looking ahead to next-generation consoles with the impending release of Microsoft's Xbox Series X and Sony's PlayStation 5. However, classic games seen on older offerings like Sega's consoles also have their place, and a device called the FunKey S on Kickstarter is looking to capitalize on that market by playing games from the Mega Drive, PS1, Game Boy, and more.
