Hamilton Boosted Disney Plus App Downloads by a Ton | Game Rant
The hit musical Hamilton came out in movie form on Disney+ over the Fourth of July weekend, and it's been a big boon for the streaming service and its app. The Disney+ app downloads this weekend jumped 74% in the U.S.
Ever since creator Lin-Manuel Miranda announced the Hamilton musical would be uploaded to Disney+ back in May, fans around the world have been excited to finally have a chance to see the show. From Friday the 3rd (the day Disney+ uploaded Hamilton) to Sunday the 5th, 752,451 of those fans downloaded the Disney+ app.
The Hamilton movie is a filmed version of the musical as it performed on Broadway, and before the pandemic Miranda had planned to release the movie version to cinemas in October 2021. The widespread quarantines from the pandemic pushed Miranda and Disney to try a direct-to-streaming method with Hamilton. Disney plans to release other films directly onto the streaming service instead of theaters as originally planned, which so far has included Onward and Artemis Fowl.
Although 700k is a big number, it's important to note that this number doesn't take into account people who signed up for Disney+ online or through Apple TV, so the actual Hamilton-induced bump may be higher. Disney+ nixed its free week-long trial period last month, so it's impossible to say right now how many people just signed up to see the incredibly popular musical and won't renew their subscriptions (which are currently $6.99/month in the U.S.). Still, this is a huge boost and it looks like the direct-to-streaming release paid off for Disney.
