Steam Has a Playtest Button Now | Game Rant
Steam has made an under-the-radar change to its beta functions, adding a playtest button for players to use. It's unclear exactly what this new button does at this point, but it seems to exist for the purpose of streamlining the process for players to gain access to closed betas.
At the moment, users have only found the button on one game, that being Total War: Elysium's Steam page. The closed beta for that game started in May, but players can now request access with this new button. Doing so alerts the user that they will be notified when the developer is ready to accept more testers.
It seems as though this is a great way for both developers and potential beta testers to make the process much simpler. Rather than jump through hoops, players need simply select this option on a game's screen and then developers will have a list of interested testers at the ready. This could also become the new way of accessing open betas, as fans may need to simply press this button in order to start playing.
It will be interesting to see if this feature rolls out to any other games or becomes the norm eventually, but in the meantime fans wanting to try it should head over to the Total War: Elysium page and request access. It also may be a good idea to keep an eye out for the button on other game pages as well, as although no one has found other games with the button just yet, that doesn't mean they don't exist or it won't be added to more games in the near future.
