The Legend of Zelda: The Missing Link is Fan-Made Game in Ocarina of Time Engine
As players wait for Nintendo to finally release some new info on Breath of the Wild 2, some players have taken it upon themselves to launch some new Legend of Zelda content of their own. In this case, the "new" content takes the form of a new mod that addresses some of the more prominent fan theories and rumors of Ocarina of Time.
Released by a fairly well known Mario modder within the community, Kaze Emanuar, this new game, titled Legend of Zelda: The Missing Link was built by a small team of fans working with the original Ocarina of Time engine for the N64. Teaming up with fellow modders like CDi-Fails and /Zel/, the game adds a brand new section onto the original game, perfect for players who have already explored everything Legend of Zelda already had to offer.
The Missing Link's adventure takes place just before the events of Majora's Mask, the second Zelda title released for N64 that also uses the same engine. As a part of this new addition, the mod includes a new story, along with an updated map from Ocarina of Time that follows link as he begins looking for Navi after she left at the end of the original game. This comes complete with new music, based off of the original game but rearranged to better fit the new adventure, as well as new dialogue to push the new story forward, and even new boss fights.
Currently, the mod is available for free to anyone who has a working version of the original Ocarina of Time rom, although acquiring these can be risky, as Nintendo is often quick to shutdown illegal sharing of its IP. While sharing a new mod that simply adds to a preexisting game is in a bit of a grey area legally, sharing the original game online is where companies and the courts often draw the line. Regardless, for anyone who does have access to the game and is looking for more Zelda content, The Missing Link is clearly a remarkable love letter to the legend of the series and the N64 releases.
Looking at what The Missing Link offers players, it's well worth giving a try, even if that means just watching the developer commentary playthrough available on Kaze Emanuar's YouTube channel. With everything that the team was able to do with Ocarina of Time's cut content and other assets to create a new adventure, it's thrilling to see what might be next for Zelda mods.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is available now for N64, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, and Wii U.
