10 Best Swords in The Legend of Zelda Series, Ranked | Game Rant
The Legend of Zelda series hosts over 30 years of swordplay across over a dozen games. Link's familiar Master Sword is only one of the many blades the Hero could wield. These legendary swords have also made their way into other titles, such as Smash Bros., Soul Calibur II, and even Hyrule Warriors.
The swordsmen of the Zelda series all have a story to tell. These blades come in many sizes, shapes, and forms. Whoever wields these swords brings out the best in Hyrule's weaponry.
10 Magic Sword
The Magic Sword debuted in the original Legend of Zelda. As the precursor to the Master Sword, this was the first "best" blade that Link acquired in the series. However, its design varies from the Master Sword's.
In SoulCalibur II, the Magic Shield accompanies this blade as a set. While the Magic Sword does not offer any boosted physical damage, this weapon can deal greater chip damage to blocking enemies at the cost of some defense against physical impact. The Magic Sword later reappeared in Hyrule Warriors.
9 Rapier
The original artwork of Twilight Princess depicted Zelda with a sword. In one cutscene, she's seen preparing to fight against the forces of Twilight. Unfortunately, she's kidnapped and the sword never sees its full purpose.
In Hyrule Warriors, Zelda serves as one of the main characters of the game. In addition to a brand new design, her Rapier returns. Zelda is a much swifter fighter than Link and can thrust through enemies and charge through with her weapon.
8 Boulder Breaker
The Boulder Breaker breaks more than rules thanks to its blunt edges. While it's shaped just like a giant sword, this weapon functions as a club. The Boulder Breaker once belonged to the Goron Champion, Daruk.
The Boulder Breaker features rock-shattering action and can crush its opponents along the way. However, it's not the most durable two-handed weapon in the game. Despite that, it's fairly easy to procure and reliable throughout the game once obtained. Daruk will reappear in the upcoming Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity along with his Boulder Breaker.
7 Gilded Sword
The upgrade to the Razor Sword debuts around the middle of Majora's Mask. While the Razor Sword featured a great aesthetic, it broke after 100 uses. The Gilded Sword allows Link to continue fighting without breaking the upgraded blade.
The Gilded Sword features more range than either the Kokiri Sword or the Razor Sword. Coupled with its greater damage, it becomes Link's best normal weapon for the rest of the game. Perhaps the Gold Powder upgrade was used as an allusion to the Golden Sword in A Link to the Past.
6 Claymore
The Greatswords in Breath of the Wild can be found all over Hyrule. These two-handed swords deal incredible damage and will send foes flying. The best that can be acquired without the use of amiibo includes the Royal Claymore and Royal Guard's Claymore.
Despite appearing in the final dungeon, they are the best representatives of the Greatswords in the game. Link will encounter many two-handed swords. But none are so ornate or well-crafted as those used by Hyrule's Royal Guard.
5 Master Sword
The big one. The Master Sword has defined Link's journey since A Link to the Past and has played a role in nearly every Zelda game since. It's Link's trademark weapon in every game outside of Zelda including Smash Bros., SoulCalibur II, and Hyrule Warriors as well. It most recently appeared in Breath of the Wild.
The Blade of Evil's Bane is oftentimes Link's ultimate weapon and usually acquired midway through a title. Both A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds offered two upgrades: Tempered Sword and Golden Sword. Phantom Hourglass also featured the Phantom Sword which, aesthetically and by purpose, played the same role as its Hyrulian counterpart.
4 Biggoron's Sword
In Ocarina of Time, when Link obtains the Giant's Knife, he can only use it a few times before it breaks. By undertaking a fetch quest, Link can obtain an upgraded, unbreakable version of the weapon a little over halfway through the game. The Biggoron's Sword features both greater range and damage than the Master Sword.
While the Biggoron's Sword does not allow Link to block by default, a simple sub-weapon cancel, such as with Hookshot, will allow him to bring up the shield when holding down R. This incredible weapon cannot slay Ganon with the final blow but will deal much greater damage to his health. Biggoron's Sword would later reappear in Oracle of Ages and Seasons, SoulCalibur II, Hyrule Warriors as Impa's weapon, and Breath of the Wild via amiibo.
3 Ganondorf's Sword
Ganondorf wields many weapons throughout the series. He dual-wields Greatswords in Ocarina of Time and Hyrule Warriors, dual-wields Katanas in Wind Waker, and even steals the Sages' Sword in Twilight Princess. However, his trademark greatsword never appeared in a single Zelda title.
Rather, Ganondorf's sword appeared originally in the Zelda Spaceworld 2000 demo for Nintendo GameCube. The weapon would later appear in Ganondorf's victory taunt in Super Smash Bros. Melee. While Ganondorf would tease his sword in taunts throughout Smash, the weapon finally became usable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Here, it's capable of three devastating Smash attacks that can KO an opponent at early percents.
2 Great Fairy's Sword
In Majora's Mask, the Great Fairy's Sword becomes the last prize Link can obtain when he saves all the Stray Fairies in Stone Tower Temple. Despite being a weapon obtained in the last dungeon, Link can still use this weapon to take on side-quests. This fantastic weapon is mapped to one of the C-buttons allowing him to interchangeably use the Gilded Sword as well without switching.
What makes the blade special includes both its incredible strength, range, and even its speed. The Great Fairy's Sword's beautiful, ornate design remains unmatched throughout the series. Furthermore, it becomes Link's ultimate weapon in SoulCalibur II where it allows him to regenerate health.
1 Fierce Deity Sword
Perhaps the single most powerful weapon in Zelda history exists within Termina. Obtained from the final mask in Majora's Mask, the Fierce Deity's Mask grants Link the power of a god. While it can only be used in the final battle and various boss rooms, this sword shreds all of Link's most powerful foes within a matter of seconds.
Similar to the Master Sword, the Fierce Deity Sword swings out energy blades. Charged by only a little bit of magic, this greatsword can fell enemies, including the all-powerful Majora, and shred their defenses. The Fierce Deity Sword reappeared in Hyrule Warriors where a critical animation shows Link slicing the dreaded moon in two.
