Godfall Gets Beautiful New Gameplay Trailer at PAX Online

As the launch of the next generation of consoles draws closer, many players' anticipation grows. In the case of Sony, the PS5 launch titles already have pages on Playstation's website. But the ultimate test of quality cannot come until players actually have the games.

One of the wildcards in the upcoming lineup is Godfall. Developed by CounterPlay Games, Godfall. Marketed as a looter slasher rather than a looter shooter, it follows Borderlands and Destiny as templates for its gameplay loop, while employing gameplay all its own. But beyond the basic premise, a lot about Godfall remains mysterious.

The art style of Godfall is different from others out there, which is to be expected. The design of the world and the characters occupying it bears more than a passing resemblance to those in Duelyst, CounterPlay's previous project. But aside from the basic premise, everything known about Godfall doesn't amount to much. However, as its release draws closer, that seems to be changing. A new gameplay trailer was released for Godfall focusing specifically on combat with enemies.

The combat trailer shows three distinct fighting styles, each represented by a different valor plate-weapon combination. In contrast to the Godfall gameplay revealed at Gamescom, the battles are much flashier and more fast-paced. The Silvermane Valorplate user wields a sword and shield, while Typhon uses a spear and a mysterious third plate wields a war hammer.

Snippets are shown of each fighting style, painting a good picture of what each is capable of. One impressive feature that is universal to each build is a slide that the characters frequently use to duck under enemy blows while repositioning themselves. It looks like a very slick version of the traditional dodge roll employed in many games.

Two of the Valorplates revealed so far in the trailer are known, even if their full range of abilities are not. The Silvermane plate seems to be a straightforward brawler, and it gets pretty brutal with its shield. The Typhon plate uses its spear to great effect with wide, fast slashes. It also uses precise strikes, a ranged throw, and even some shieldwork like the Silvermane. The biggest difference is in the gameplay for the unknown plate and its war hammer. For the most part, it's the expected slow, large swings, but at one point it uses the warhammer like a boomerang.

It certainly looks like combat in Godfall has the potential to be very engaging. However, the biggest potential pitfall for Godfall is not touched on in the video: its loot system. There are still questions about the rarity of the weapons seen, and how exactly they interact with the Valorplates. This information will color the combat shown differently once it is known. Whether it will look ridiculous or brilliant with hindsight, only time will tell.

Godfall is in development for the PC and PS5.
