Marvel's Avengers Investigating Bug That Results in No Hive Loot
Live-service games on the scale of Marvel’s Avengers rarely launch without at least a few noticeable hiccups. That being said, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ new superhero game seems to be having a rougher launch than usual in several spots. Putting aside the issues players have with the game’s mission structure and cosmetic system, the game has seen quite a few bugs, and not all of them are as benign as Captain America’s face turning into a glitchy horror.
In the past week, it’s been discovered that some of these bugs have been depriving players of their hard-earned rewards, like in the game’s Hive missions. Hives are one type of Marvel’s Avengers’ War Zone missions in which players tackle different objectives while fighting their way through five randomized floors of enemies. These tend to take anywhere between 20-30 minutes to complete on average, making them one of the game’s longest activities, but on the plus side, they do bring a chance of rewarding players with exotic loot.
Unfortunately, it seems that a bug has been causing some Elite Hive runs to stop giving out any rewards. Several reports have been making their way online this week, highlighting the latest example of a Marvel’s Avengers bug causing rewards to disappear, and so far players have been unable to figure out what could be causing the problem.
While the exact cause remains a mystery, developers at Crystal Dynamics, including combat director Phil Therien, have confirmed that there is a bug in Marvel's Avengers interfering with Elite Hive rewards, and that they are investigating it. Additionally, Therien clarified that exotic drops only have a chance of being given out in Elite Hives, since there was some confusion among players as to whether they were supposed to be guaranteed rewards.
None of the developers were able to provide an ETA for when a fix might be made available, and when asked about it, Crystal Dynamics simply told GamesRadar, “We're looking into this.” At any rate, the fix wasn’t included in the most recent patch for Marvel’s Avengers, and it’s possible that it might not be included in the next. For the time being, it’s likely that many players are going to start foregoing Elite Hives for other missions, not wanting to put so much time into something that might not give them anything in return.
On the bright side, Marvel’s Avengers offers plenty of things for players to do on a daily basis, so players still have ways to earn high-tier loot outside of Elite Hives.
Marvel's Avengers is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One, and will release for PS5 and Xbox Series X at a later date.
