Dark Pictures: 10 Choices Not To Make In Little Hope | Game Rant
When it comes to decision-driven survival-horror games, one developer stands head and shoulders above the rest. Supermassive Games may not be the largest studio out there, but the talented team of writers and programmers have crafted a few truly terrific titles over the last five years.
Their latest game, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope, builds upon the foundations laid by the studio's earlier hits. It introduces some brand new mechanics and a whole new cast of characters whose fates are placed in the player's hands. It's a game that's full of split-second decisions and one where one small mistake can lead to a character's brutal death.
10 Not Paying Attention To Locked Traits
One of the key mechanics found in Little Hope are character traits, which can have a big impact on how characters can respond to certain events. Some of these are inherently negative and build up throughout the game depending on the player's choices. Accruing too many of them can have some pretty dire consequences when the game's climax comes around.
While having a few negative traits isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's important to avoid picking up too many. This can generally be accomplished by making choices that go against the negative traits. Being friendly and positive also helps, as does avoiding conflict where possible.
9 Taking The Drink From Vince
Early on in the game during the Vince chapter, the player will be in control of John at the Black Cat bar. It's here that the player is first introduced to Vince, who will offer John a drink. The player must then decide whether or not to accept it.
Although accepting the drink seems like the friendly thing to do, it's very much the wrong decision. Not only does accepting it have no obvious benefits, but it also gives John a locked trait. Given the importance of avoiding these, it's best to decline Vince's offer.
8 Pleading For Help
Several of the characters have heroic choices, through which it's possible to unlock negative traits. Taylor's comes in the Reflections chapter shortly after her and Daniel are attacked. After Daniel arrives, the player can either beg for help or tell him to save himself. Choosing the former will lead to her negative traits remaining locked.
Daniel's heroic choice is fairly similar. While exploring the textile factory with Andrew in the Ruined chapter, he will fall down a hole and be attacked by his demon. Once again, there'll be a chance to ask for help or take on the demon alone. Just like last time, players should avoid asking for help if they want to unlock Daniel's traits.
7 Leaving Angela Behind
After witnessing the execution in the Heavy Burden chapter, Angela and John will be confronted by a demon outside the burnt home. With Angela in real trouble, John will pick up a hammer and the player must decide whether to help Angela or run.
Saving her is the obvious choice and doing so will result in the group escaping and entering the burnt house. If the player chooses to run, Angela will be horrifically killed. As annoying as she can be at times, saving her is probably still the right thing to do.
6 Saving Daniel
During the Low Point chapter, both Daniel and Taylor are attacked and the player will be given the choice to save one of them. On the surface it can seem like a case of deciding which one will die, but it's actually possible to save them both.
It would seem that Daniel is more than capable of taking care of himself though, as choosing to save Taylor will lead to both characters surviving. If the player chooses to save Daniel though, Taylor will die painfully.
5 Asking The Group To Stay Behind
Shortly after saving Angela in the Heavy Burden chapter, the group will run inside the burnt house. John will hang back and hold the door shut. It's at this point that the player has a very important decision to make.
John can either ask the other members of the group for help or tell them to go on without him. It should be pretty clear to players that the latter is the heroic choice. As such, if they don't tell the rest of the group to run, John's negative traits will not be unlocked.
4 Picking Up The Gun
There are two weapons that players can pick up during the game. While picking up the knife has no negative consequences, players should think twice before picking up the gun. It can certainly be useful at times, but the decision to pick it up can have devastating consequences.
If the player takes the gun, there will come a point in the Low Point chapter where they are able to shoot at one of the demons. Choosing to do so will lead to the player missing and accidently killing Angela. As such, unless players really struggle with QTEs, it's best not to pick the gun up at all.
3 Shooting At The Demon Behind Vince
Vince is a fairly significant character who pops up at several times throughout the game. While on the surface he doesn't seem too important, remaining on his good side is vital for those hoping to unlock the game's 'good' ending.
There are a few ways to mess things up with Vince, but the worst takes place at the end of the Pursued chapter. While outside the old Church, there'll come a point where there is a demon behind Vince. If the player picked up the gun, they will be given the option to shoot it. This will lead to Vince calling the cops at the end of the game and Andrew/Anthony being arrested.
2 Letting Mary Get Condemned
During the story's closing stages, players are taken to Mary's witch trial where they'll have to argue her case. There are numerous dialogue options and choices here and they can vary depending on the player's choices throughout the game.
To avoid catastrophe, the player needs to ensure that Mary is not condemned by convincing Abraham to incriminate Carver instead. Should they fail to do so, the demons will attack the group shortly after and will kill multiple characters.
1 Letting Mary Get Condemned And Having Bullets Remaining In The Gun
The gun is connected to many of the possible negative outcomes found throughout Little Hope. Perhaps the darkest of them all comes at the game's climax though. If Mary is executed and Andrew still has a loaded weapon at the end of the game, Andrew/Anthony will shoot himself.
This can be easily avoided by never picking up the gun in the first place. Alternatively, players can use up all of the ammo or prevent Mary's execution. Assuming Mary survives, Megan will prevent Andrew/Anthony from killing himself. It's still a dark ending, but a considerably better outcome.
