Fall Guys Dev Mediatonic Opens Second Development Studio
Although the strange nature of 2020 has seen it produce some of this generation's biggest sleeper hits, few can measure up to Mediatonic's quirky indie platformer Fall Guys. Going from a relatively obscure take on the battle royale genre to one of the biggest multiplayer games of the year, it goes without saying that Fall Guys has a bright future if it continues following its current path.
For those wondering what's next for Mediatonic following the launch of its recent viral phenomenon, the studio has just announced that it has opened a new studio in Leamington Spa in the UK and is hiring more staff to bolster its ranks. The new location will allegedly be led by the company's vice president of Art, Phil Warner, and will supposedly be working on Fall Guys and a range of "other exciting projects."
As it stands, Mediatonic currently has several offices based all over the UK and beyond, with the developer's name currently popping up in London, Guilford, Brighton, and Madrid. It'll be interesting to see what the devs intend to work on over the next few years, especially with such a wide influx of new talent slated to join the studio. Of course, while the rampant success of Fall Guys means a large section of the studio's staff will be working to ensure future seasons of the game are up to snuff, Mediatonic has worked on a wide variety of titles in the past. These include Gears POP, Fable Fortune, Hatoful Boyfriend, and Lights, Camera, Murder.
The studio clearly likes to work on a variety of games in all manner of genres, so it will be intriguing to see whether any other major projects crop up in the coming years. As for now though, Fall Guys will be transitioning into its third season very soon, with the game set to take on a winter theme befitting of the upcoming holiday season. Although no specific new levels have been detailed, it seems players will be able to dress up in a penguin and snowman costume, welcoming the countdown to Christmas in style.
The game itself has easily been one of the year's most surprising hits, managing to become the most-downloaded game in PlayStation Plus history and selling millions of copies on Steam. That's without even mentioning the multiplayer hit dominating the streaming world and partnering with some huge franchises, including Sonic, Half-Life, Portal, Untitled Goose Game, and even Godzilla. The game will be competing in two weeks' time for four awards at The Game Awards, with it standing a good chance of snagging some gold after winning both Best Multiplayer and Best Family at the Golden Joysticks.
Fall Guys is out now on PC and PlayStation 4.
