Final Fantasy 15 Fans Are Celebrating Its 4th Anniversary
Beginning all the way back in 1987, Final Fantasy is one of gaming's longest-running and most treasured franchises, spanning numerous mainline entries as well as several notable spinoffs. This year alone has been massive for the series of fantasy games, with Final Fantasy 7 Remake recently securing a Game of the Year nomination at the Game Awards, while Square Enix announced the next original iteration of the franchise: Final Fantasy 16.
However, it wasn't long ago that the company released Final Fantasy 15, with the entry in the series hitting shelves back in 2016. With today marking the game's fourth anniversary, it seems Final Fantasy fans have come out in droves to share their love for Square Enix's work.
Over on Twitter, typing in the hashtag "FFXV" brings up a ton of celebratory posts from fans highlighting the game and the impact it had on them, whether that's through screenshots of their favorite scenes, posting artwork they've drawn, or sharing cosplays they've worn. Throughout the posts, it seems most players cite the game as a memorable adventure in spite of its flaws, with fans sharing that they've clocked hundreds of hours over their time with it.
One player claimed Final Fantasy 15 is "a great game that had a rough launch. But, the team delivered and spruced it up with some amazing post-launch work," going on to claim that they "consider it among the best of the series," while another states: "this game introduced [the] Final Fantasy world to me and I’m so glad I played it."
Final Fantasy 15 originally launched in 2016, marking the first single-player focused mainline entry in the franchise since Final Fantasy 13 in 2009. It spent a long time in development and was a massively hyped release, managing to meet expectations and becoming a cult-hit among the fanbase. The game itself follows a band of friends adventuring across the land of Eos in search of a magical crystal. Along the way, they're forced to fight the evil forces of Niflheim in a quest to return Noctis - the heir to the Lucian throne and Final Fantasy 15's main protagonist - to a position of power.
Upon release, it was very well received, although many noted that its launch was particularly rocky. However, in the years since, Square Enix has updated the game frequently and made it one of the biggest entries in the series to date. The next mainline Final Fantasy game will be the franchise's sixteenth entry, promising a darker and more mature experience than prior iterations of the popular video game staple. More information is slated to be revealed about the title next year, although early signs seem to hint that Final Fantasy 16 could be just as successful as its predecessor.
Final Fantasy 15 is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
