GTA Competitor Everywhere Coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X
For the past five years, Rockstar has continued to focus its efforts on Grand Theft Auto and making more content for GTA Online. While GTA fans continue to speculate on the next GTA, 6, there is a new game on the horizon that could be a potential competitor to Grand Theft Auto called Everywhere.
Everywhere is being developed by Build A Rocket Boy Studio, an independent studio founded by former Rockstar North president, Leslie Benzies, and comprised of over 400 employees with seasoned GTA developers. Benzies had previously explained that the title will be an open-world, sci-fi video game where humanity utilizes advanced virtual simulation technology. The developer revealed on the game's Facebook page that Everywhere will now be using the Unreal Engine for its development.
Now that the Unreal Engine is compatible with Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X and S, the game can arrive on the next-gen consoles whenever it's completed. Previously, Build A Rocket Boy was developing the new game on Amazon's Lumberyard game engine, but now the developer made the switch due to the benefits Unreal Engine will bring to the title. The developer stated the engine's tech advancements over the last two years align with the its intentions for the game, and will allow Everywhere to stay at the forefront of the industry for years.
Other than that, Build A Rocket Boy hasn't revealed any more details behind changing the game engine. The developer has wrapped up the latest round of funding with a new investor in Galaxy Interactive alongside existing investors, such as NetEase. This resulted in the developer gaining even more funding in addition to Build A Rocket Boy's $42 million raised this past September.
Unlike before, Build A Rocket Boy hasn't disclosed the exact figures, but it's possible the funding is going towards developing the game and adding more people. In the same post, the developer reveals that it's hiring more staff in all disciplines for its Edinburgh and Budapest studios. There are studio job listings for open positions in Arts, Code, Scripting, Cinematics, Production, and more for Edinburgh with a single Coding position for Budapest.
With the new changes, Build A Rocket Boy is continuing full production of its first title and doesn't seem to be slowing down, though no release date has been announced. GTA fans have speculated that Everywhere might even release before Rockstar launches its next game, but that's only speculation. Whether Everywhere ends up being a competitor to the GTA series remains to be seen, but Build A Rocket Boy has big plans for its first major title.
