Some PS5 Users Reporting 'Dirty' Discolored Consoles | Game Rant
The PS5 is a massive success for Sony right now. The PS5 is already on track to outperform the PS4 in sales, and fans seem to be delighted with its new games and features. Reports of PS5s breaking are few and far between so far, and even software issues like games permanently being stuck downloading and the Rest Mode issue seem to have been patched out already. There is one small issue, however, as some PS5 owners are reporting that the console is quickly starting to look “dirty.”
When the PS5 was first revealed, its design was lampooned quite a bit. Many people online made memes mocking the PS5's appearance, and asked why it wasn’t black like the past 3 PlayStation consoles. Even comedian and host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight John Oliver said it looked like, “a penguin designed by Apple.” Many prefer that all of the boxes near their TV be black, avoiding distractions and not showing as much dirt and dust.
That fear over the PS5 showing dirt and dust has become a reality for a few owners. Some users have posted photos on sites like Reddit of their PS5s showcasing splotchy black spots and swirls that are a little unsightly.
Many commenters reply to these posts with jokes about mistreating the new system, but some sympathize with stories, sharing pictures of their own as they try to guess why this is happening. A popular theory is that it is soot from a nearby lit candle or other airborne dirt, which the powerful PS5 fans suck in.
One poster questioned if it had something to do with the heat of the console causing discoloration in the plastic, which is a common occurrence in plastics, but would be surprising given the relatively cool temperatures the PS5 is able to keep itself at. Though there have been some instances of a PS5 overheating.
The “dirt” in some cases seems to be easier to clean than in others. For some, it is just a matter of popping the panels off and cleaning them. For others, it appears soap and water, and even Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, are not enough to remove the strange black marks from the system. Some have reported success with getting Sony to send them replacement panels, but only after being told no once or twice.
Sony has yet to comment on the issue publicly. Hopefully, someday Sony will fulfill people’s wishes and release black panels for the PS5 that won’t show dirt marks like these users are posting about. One company endeavored to beat Sony to the punch by taking preorders for different colored panels of their own, but Sony threatened legal action and stopped the company.
