Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - How to Get Wakizashi Sword
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players have been given a large content drop with Season 1, with two new melee weapons added to the game. One of these two tools for close quarters combat is the Wakizashi Sword, which Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players can obtain through completion of an in-game challenge.
Like the challenge tied to the Sledgehammer, the other melee weapon added in Season 1, players will need to complete a melee-related objective to get the Wakizashi Sword to unlock. A flashier version of the combat knife, the long blade gives players an increased melee range that comes with the cost of sacrificing some speed. For players interested in wielding a sword in their Call of Duty matches, there are a few ways that they can go about making the weapon’s unlock challenge easier.
If players have an interest in using the “companion sword to the Samurai’s Katana,” completion of the weapon’s challenge is required. To get the sword, players will need to “execute 2 Finishing Moves in 10 different matches,” with the catch being that the combat knife must be equipped during the special melee finisher. Like other Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War challenges, players can track the progress made on the task via the loadout menu.
While this challenge will take a bit of doing for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players, it is a bit easier than unlocking the sledgehammer due to the knife not actually needing to be used. With a secret combat knife nerf sneaking into the game a few weeks back, pulling off kills with the blade has been a challenge as of late. Thankfully, finishing moves trigger an animation of their own, making the combat knife’s slowed swiping speed irrelevant. On top of this, it will only take 10 matches to unlock the Wakizashi Sword, five less that the match count required for the Sledgehammer.
While skilled players will likely be facing some stiff competition due to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s skill-based matchmaking, there are a few ways to make completion of the challenge easier. First, players should equip the perks Ghost and Ninja. With the former keeping players off the radar when moving and the latter making it easier to sneak up on enemies, the two perks should help players get more opportunities to do finishing moves easier. The Tracker perk may help as well, as it will show players where enemies can be found.
Unfortunately, there is no way to speed up finishing moves, with the lengthy executions leaving players open to being shot down by an enemy’s team. As such, maps and modes will be incredibly important. One of the current playlists in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is Holiday Nuketown 24/7, and it is one of the best for this challenge due to the opportunities players have for sneaking behind window and garage campers. Raid 24/7 could also work for those familiar with the map. Players should also vote for objective game modes in these 24/7 playlists, as they can flank easier due to the set spawns of modes like Domination and Hardpoint.
For players still struggling on the smaller Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War maps, picking off distracted foes on the larger Combined Arms locations could work as well — though be warned that this strategy is riskier due to how long it takes to reach the fight. Regardless, players should have no problem unlocking the Wakizashi Sword eventually, especially if they use the perks above and make sure to have the combat knife equipped during finishing moves.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
