Cyberpunk 2077 Has Already Sold More Than 13 Million Units
A new announcement states that Cyberpunk 2077 has already sold over 13 million copies, despite the widespread controversy surrounding the game's launch.
CD Projekt Red's long-awaited, repeatedly delayed RPG officially launched on December 10. The game has since been heavily criticized by the gaming community for its performance issues, especially on consoles. With the countless bugs and glitches inspiring humorous clips of just how much can go wrong in Cyberpunk 2077, many players have demanded refunds, but that doesn't appear to have slowed sales.
Announced on its official website, CD Projekt Red's figure of 13 million includes both retail and digital sales of the game across all platforms. Additionally, the developer states that it reached this number after factoring in refunds submitted by all digital and brick-and-mortar storefronts. The only non-included returns are the retail copies of Cyberpunk 2077 that CD Projekt Red is refunding directly. CD Projekt's management team states towards the end of the memo that the announcement is being made in an effort to curb the impact all the negative press might have on the game developer's investors.
Despite the seemingly positive sales numbers, CDPR has a legitimate reason to worry. CD Projekt investors are reportedly looking into filing a class-action lawsuit due to the developer supposedly misrepresenting Cyberpunk 2077 for "financial benefits." This would mean that the company broke an SEC rule that makes it unlawful to deceive a person or people during security transactions. Basically, the game is so broken that those who invested in the title are looking to get their money back.
Cyberpunk 2077's woes unfortunately don't stop there. In addition to all of the negative press and plenty of gamers angry or disappointed, CD Projekt Red's own team is reportedly in turmoil. The company's staff members have been vocally upset with management over Cyberpunk 2077's launch issues. Staff recently voiced their anger over potentially jeopardizing the company's own reputation, unrealistic deadlines, and the extensive crunch periods to get the title out as soon as possible. The entire situation has a large portion of Cyberpunk 2077 console players upset, especially after CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kaciński claimed PS4 and Xbox One performance was "surprisingly good" around a week before launch.
However, despite all of the negative attention the game has received in the past few weeks, CD Projekt Red promises to improve players' experience in Night City. Cyberpunk 2077 recently released its 1.04 update, which hotfixes various issue on PC and PS4. Non-PC gamers just might want to wait this one out for a while.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. It will release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2021.
