Fans Aren't Happy About Red Dead Online Bounty Hunter Update
While opinions are a little mixed when it comes to gameplay, most agree that Red Dead Redemption 2 is a good game. Its story is widely beloved, to the point where other RPGs can take pointers.
However, Red Dead Redemption 2 is expanding past the anchor of its story and characters. Red Dead Online, originally the side multiplayer option for the game, is being expanded into a separate experience. Red Dead Online is now a standalone release that players can purchase for $5, but not all is well with this situation, as the Bounty Hunter Update accompanying the standalone version release has not gone over well with some fans.
Now that Red Dead Online Standalone and the Bounty Hunter Update are both live, players immediately noticed some problems. Specifically that the focus of the Update, the Bounty Hunter Class, has less content for the class than other classes had originally. Despite this, unlocking the class and its content costs more premium currency — typically requiring real-world money — than other, more content-heavy classes. This might be fixed in future updates, but for now, people feel it's a lackluster decision by Rockstar. In the words of one player: "In short, it’s a small addition to the Bounty Hunter role that is absolutely not worth 15 gold, with accompanying skills and clothes to unlock. Plus an Outlaw Pass of lazy, ugly cosmetics and quality-of-life improvements that should not sit behind a 40 gold purchase."
Another problem centers around the Outlaw Pass, Red Dead Online's version of a Battle Pass. The Outlaw Pass existed before this update, offering rewards as players level up with better rewards available if players pay. Many have considered the premium Pass worth it in the past, as fully leveling it rewarded a full refund in premium currency spent. However, this is no longer the case unless players purchase the Pass within its first week. When the Red Dead Online standalone version was announced, people anticipated problems, but not changes to the Outlaw Pass.
Some of the problems players had with the Red Dead Online standalone version in concept also came to pass. Players anticipated that the Outlaw Pass would prove lackluster in the rewards it offered, and it seems they still feel this way. Most of the content is not what fans want, including filters and picture poses rather than equipment and cosmetics. Previous concerns about hackers swarming the game on PC have yet to occur, but players should be careful nonetheless.
Finally, daily challenges now reward one-tenth the amount of gold they did before. This was mentioned in patch notes, but not in any Rockstar announcements on social media. This particular change was so bad some players thought it was a bug, but as the game's own Reddit points out, they really did change it. This mirrors the reward and battle pass system in Hearthstone, which fans have criticized. Similarly, Red Dead Online players are upset by their new situation, so it will be interesting to see if Rockstar responds.
Red Dead Online is available for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
