Kevin Hart and Wesley Snipes Teaming Up in Netflix Limited Series
Kevin Hart is looking to make a jump into the world of drama with his next project. Pairing up with Wesley Snipes, the comedian and the vampire will star as brothers in Netflix's True Story, which will air as a limited series. Eric Newman, showrunner and creator of the Narcos franchise, is set to write and executive produce the upcoming show.
Hart will star as Kid, a world-famous comedian returning to his hometown of Philadelphia for a gig, only to run into more than he expected when a reunion with his errant brother (Snipes) threatens his entire future. The story is a work of fiction, but the character of Kid is based on Hart himself, who also grew up in Philadelphia with a similarly troublesome brother. His own company, HartBeat Productions, will produce the series.
Directors Stephen Williams (HBO's Watchmen) and Hanelle Culpepper (Star Trek: Discovery) will split directing duties while Charles Murray (Luke Cage) will serve as showrunner. Even here in the planning stages, True Story already has one heck of a jumping-off point with talent like this. With Williams clearly adept at intense drama and Culpepper seasoned in shows with a mix of the serious and the less so, this upcoming series seems to be in good hands.
Hart appeared thrilled to work with Snipes, being a long-time admirer of his work. "I've always been a fan of Wesley Snipes and working with him is mind-blowing," he said, speaking on the announcement of the series. Snipes didn't have anything to add, but since he hasn't been in the spotlight much in a while aside from a steady stream of modest work, fans are sure to be excited to see him headlining again.
It will be interesting to see where this series goes. Hart isn't particularly known for dramatic roles (this marks his debut in the world of TV drama), so it should be a fascinating new glimpse at his acting chops. Snipes, on the other hand, thrives in the stuff. A dramatic actor like him bouncing off an established comedian like Hart will likely lead to some unexpected dynamics as the show goes on.
Regardless of how it goes, here's hoping it turns out to be a fulfilling experience for everyone involved. Of course, it would be best if that happens while also providing a satisfying narrative and spectacle for the audience, but these days, it's probably best to just accept any positivity that comes.
There is currently no premiere date for True Story.
