Rust Raised $80,000 for Charity Through Virtual Mustaches

Rust is a survival horror game initially developed in 2013 by Facepunch Studios for PC gamers everywhere to enjoy. Players of the game will remember it fondly for how brutally difficult a game it can be at times, but how rewarding it can be when gamers can collaborate in a community to solve problems and meet new friends.

As part of the celebration for the seventh anniversary of Rust, Facepunch decided to give back to players by helping out the Movember movement. For readers who don't know, the Movember movement is a charity organization whose goal is to raise awareness for men's health issues by growing mustaches and giving financial assistance to men in need during the month of November.

This past November, Facepunch studios created digital Movember mustaches for its players to purchase in the game for around $5 and raise funds for the charity campaign. Thanks to the efforts of the fanbase community, 20,000 digital mustaches were sold, and the company was able to raise $80,000 for the cause. This makes Facepunch one of the biggest donors in the UK for the movement for this year.

This announcement came to players alongside the updated patch notes for Rust thanking the fans for their support in helping give to the cause. Facepunch Studios also shared a link to the company's team page on the Movember website, showcasing all the members' attempts to grow their own mustaches.

Facepunch studios also took the opportunity to celebrate the game's seventh anniversary alongside this event by introducing a sweet chocolate and raspberry birthday cake with a number seven candle in the middle of it. The cake was brought in on December 3rd at 1 pm EST/19:00 GMT that players can enjoy virtually in the game. Rust has also implemented a tech tree for the game to simplify crafting, and greatly improved loot quality from airdrops, so there's more for fans to enjoy beyond the results of their fundraising efforts.

The support of any studio deciding to raise awareness for men's health in any way that they can is a boon. It is an important cause that often gets overlooked in today's society. The Movember movement deals with a variety of men's health issues such as mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. However, readers were able to give back to the cause; with any luck, they were able to reach out to a man in need.

Rust is available for PC, Mac, and Linux platforms.
